After working at a company in Pittston, PA for the past 34 years, the company held a meeting at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesday and by 9:30 a.m., my husband was out of a job due to the plant closing and the company going out of business (they closed plants in Pittston, PA and Columbus, Ohio and Perrysburg, Ohio.

I really don't want to say much out here, but I am quite familiar with the situation, but I hadn't heard that part yet... I didn't realize that Tehneglas or Nippon Electric Glass wasn't going to pay severence for anything. Last I heard, the workers were on the payroll for at least 60 days. My heart really goes out to you right now... I hope your DH can find something soon.

We were in your shoes one year ago with my husbands workplace. I feel for you...the worry almost overwhelmed us at times.

Is/was there any pension for the people who put so much time into their jobs?

I'll keep your family in my prayers as you deal with the shock of suddenly being out of work. Be sure to connect with anyone and everyone who can help with job searches, financial advice and possibly even job re-training. Do that as soon as possible even though you're still numb from the shock......

Again, I'm so sorry to hear about the company your husband worked for going out of business.

Yes there is... and as of yesterday that was still in tact for those who were a part of the pension plan. Benefits may not be what they should be, but the pension will at least still be there.

And obviously I am close to someone who was affected by this, but I guess you could say I am not comfortable saying in public who that is ;)

That's good news mixed in with the bad, huh helenabear? LOL

My husband lost his pension after being with his company 28 years. Now we just look at our lives day to day. There's NO way at this age that we can make up what he lost.......frightening but oddly freeing once we realize it's out of our hands.
For now, just being employed is the most important.

My best wishes to everyone affected by the demise of this company.

As far as we know pensions are in tact and guaranteed by the PBGC. My husband still has to go into work to fill orders and will probably be dismantling the plant. We are more fortunate than most because I work at a hospital and have very good insurance which is a big advantage. They can collect for 26 weeks and then under NAFTA they are eligible to go back to school for the next 104 weeks and get their unemployment and schooling paid (at least under PA unemployment compensation). You just feel bad for the poor people who are going to fall between the cracks because they aren't old enough to collect a pension or will have to pay for health insurance so we consider ourselves lucky. Plus we have our health which is worth everything. We can honestly say that we saw the plant closing but didn't expect it this soon. We were also surprised to see that the company shut down all plants (since the Ohio plants were smaller in employees than the PA plant).

Helenabear...we have a mutual friend in MickeyFan1---we had lunch with her when we were in New Hampshire!!
