Anyone else’s kid traveling overseas now?

If a ground invasion happens in Gaza I think you could see a lot more protests. There have been some really large ones. Now wether those protest turn violent or terrorist threats increase or are carried out is yet to be seen.

Last week they kept evacuating major tourists sights in Paris due to threats. Not a good week to be a tourist in Paris.

I’m generally not one to worry about my safety, but I probably wouldn’t travel to Europe right this minute. I’d wait a week or so to see how this plays out. Of course the posturing could go on for months so who knows.

As far your daughter goes I’d just tell her to stay away from any of the protests and go about her business.

Oh well that explains it. Yeah east Berlin is, well, east Berlin. Berlin is the only city in BRD where I raise a little extra guard. There is a big
Homeless problem there and parts of the city can be a little dicey at night. No reason not to move there per se but I get where you’re coming from. If she’s that dedicated to Germany, have you thought about going with her on a trip?
Nope. At this point my wife and I will be in St. Louis tracing her family history while our daughter is in German.

From what I've seen from friends who are currently on vacation in Europe, the biggest issue right now is concerns of bedbugs rather than anything to do with safety. I saw a FB post today from one friend that found them all over her Airbnb in Paris.

Luckily, they are done with Paris and France and were able to stay bed bug free!😁

My daughter is taking a short trip to Amsterdam in November. I am nervous about it but I cannot stop her.

Just remind her stay away from any of the protests. The madness of crowds and all. It only takes a few instigators to set things off. Easier said than done curiosity tends to take over.

Beautiful city and Schiphol is a nice airport. I’d Tell her to avoid the “coffee shops” (pot bars). They are
Overpriced and only cater to tourists.

I'm sure your daughter has a good head on her shoulders and will be fine.

I get your worry though.

Our son, now 24, traveled at the onset of Covid- in February 2020 when it was first brewing. In France, his group was spit on and had beer spilled on them because they were American. Coming back into the states, they were held up as the CDC came on board to test them for Covid just as the president was closing international travel.

In summer 2022, he ran with the bulls in Spain.

This past summer he did a month backpacking Europe (Spain, Portugal, Austria, Poland, Amsterdam, etc) with no plan, taking each day and destination one day at a time. He met fellow travelers from around the world on the trip and stayed in hostels. He had a great time, but had uneasy feelings spending an afternoon in an airport in Morroco with armed guards checking passports.

I have more gray hairs, but he has great memories, experiences and so much personal growth and life stories. And your daughter will, too.

Never saw anything like that in Europe.
Neither did I.

That's horrific. In all the years I've been travelling and living internationally, not once have I had someone treat me poorly because I'm an American. Some think I'm Canadian, or they ask me about my country with curiosity, especially when I was travelling during Trump's term. I do speak several languages and also carry an EU passport but that really hasn't made a difference.

I just went and got a Covid shot and some unhinged person almost got into it with me outside of the Kaiser Medical Center. I just ignored them but I could tell he just needed a spark to start throwing punches. Never saw anything like that in Europe.
Such a weird statement I don't even know where to begin. You're comparing what you see as a tourist to actually living somewhere 365 days a year....um ok. If you lived in Europe you'd eventually see a fight or an unhinged person. I actually saw plenty of that on all my trips to Europe. Mental illness isn't confined to one nationality.

lol the poster didn’t say whether they experienced Europe as a tourist or as a resident, to be fair. You are correct, I’ve seen unhinged nutty people in Europe, I had one yell at me in Berlin while sitting on a subway platform. I think what poster may have been trying to say was that the likelihood of getting accosted might be greater in the us. Other than the guy in Berlin who was pretty tame, I’ve never been accosted in Europe the way the poster was.

And while you’re correct that all nationalities have mental illness, how countries treat those with said illness varies drastically around the world and the USA isn’t known for being good at it.

DGD is living with family in France right now. She also travels back and forth to Switzerland visiting friends. She has a protocol for train travel and does a good job following it without security concerns interfering too much with her mindset. I suspect its a similar way of thinking for living in NYC.

My son is studying in London. He's probably walking distance from the East London Mosque. Not worried at all.

It's actually not unusual for armed guards to check passports in Morocco. It's probably a little startling when you're not used to it. I was actually escorted through customs by two military members that were friends of my then brother in-law and it quite surreal.

Post 9/11 you would need the King himself to come and escort you through customs, they beefed up security quite a bit.

We encountered armed police in Cancun just patrolling away. Several of them passing on ATVs on the beaches where we were staying and then you'd see helicopters close to the coast a few times a day too. It's not entirely unusual there and highly publicized this year for increased patrolling and presence but also not something we're used to here. It startled my mother-in-law more than any of us.

I am Dutch, I live in the Netherlands. If needed stay away from Dam Square. If there's anything going on, it's usually there. Today there were protests throughout the country, no incidents. People gathering with flags and signs.
