I know I should just call the dealership...but I'm being lazy...and people on the Dis know dang near everything anyway....

I have a 2005 RAV4...for the 1000 mile oil change, I brought it to the dealership (cause it was free!)...DH did the next oil change (as he has with ALL my other vehicals)

I now have the "Maint Req" light flashing at me when I start the car (it turns off after 10 seconds or so)...I looked it up quickly, and the light just means "change the oil"...is there something we have to reset if we change the oil ourselves? Anyone know how to do that?

Thanks!

I don't know, but when you find out please tell me.

I have a new Highlander. I have been taking it to the dealer for oil changes because the first 3 changes are free. But if I go 5,000 miles between oil changes the light will promptly come on. I am wondering what I will do when I go to changing my own oil?

Anyway, my friend has a Honda Civic that does this. He said that his owner's manual tells how to reset it yourself. Basically when you start the car you have to depress some button on the dashboard and this will reset it. He said that it is probably similar in the Toyota's. I just haven't taken the time to figure it out.

Hmm...good point! Yeah I should probably read the manual! heheh

ya know - I got rid of my pathfinder for this...and Nissans are the KINGS of lights coming on at horrific times (I never saw a 'service engine soon" light more then when I owned that truck!) hehe

the RAV only has 1 button on the dash...the one to reset the trip-o-meter...this should be interesting...

thanks though - if i figure it out i'll let you know!

Ooooohhh, found this on the ToyotaNation message board. It is for Highlander, but I think it applies to all new Toyotas:

With the car key on ACC, set your odometer on mileage(not trip a or b) then turn key off. Then hold the button that switchs from odo and trip, then turn the key back to acc. while you are holding it down you will notice the maintenance light blink and go out. and then you are done. now that wasn't hard now was it.

that sounds like the secret code I entered into my Nintendo when I was younger to get "eternal life" when playing Zelda.

heheheh

THANK YOU! I'm gonna go out and try this at lunch time!

(Hmm...how many times do you think it'll blink? Cause mine blinks for like 10 seconds now then turns off. Yes - not SUPER annoying at all...but still...)

thank you again!

I don't know how long it will blink. My light is weird. As I approach 5,000 between oil changes, it starts to blink when I first start the car and then goes off. But when I hit the "magic" number of having travelled 5,000 miles without an oil change, it stays on permanently. It scared me so bad one morning, I drove directly to the dealer and had my carpool buddy pick me up there. (I didn't know that it was only for oil changes). So does your light stay on permanantly?

ok...
I had my 1000 freebie at the dealership
DH did my next oil change around 4100
so I'm assuming I'm around 500 miles from it staying on permanently. heheh (yes - it's blinking now just when I start the car....I think it's like 'danger...danger'....then climaxes at "DANGER STOP DRIVING, LOOK AT THIS LIGHT". heheheh

(I wonder what it resets too? I mean - does it go on every 3000 miles? if so - pretty nifty! nice reminder since I have to eyeball it...I write the milage down in a book in my glovebox when dh does my oil...but I kinda have to 'remember' it. heheh)

glad I asked here! :)

The dealership sets it (the mileage amount) in accordance with your manual I think. I think they can program it to come on at any mileage they want. Evil, I tell you. :teeth:

lovely! hehehehe

how do you like the highlander? My parents each have 4Runners (my mom is on her second one! Dad's is a company car)...as much as I like them - they are HUGE and just not what I need at this stage in my life. I like my itsy little RAV...but I'm sure eventually (ie - after we have a couple of kids)..I'll need something a bit bigger! heheh

I'm really enjoying the Highlander. It is my first SUV. I think I am still a "car" person and it does feel big to me, but it drives a lot like a car and I like that. The gas mileage sucks (I'm used to the Camry) and I'm not sure I'll ever get over it. But, if the gas were cheaper I would LOVE the Highlander.

well...going from the pathfinder to the RAV...my gas mileage has improved. (well - I still fill up often...but I go the same distances on a smaller tank of gas...and i can put the cheap stuff in the RAV!)

This is my THIRD Toyota...I had 2 hand-me-downs from my dad...a camry wagon and a camry sedan. But I'll never go back to a sedan...I bought the pathfinder because my camry sedan couldnt' make it on the hilly areas near me in the winter...I felt more secure with the 4WD in the SUV.

thanks again so much for your help!
