There is a local Race for the Cure coming up on Oct 20th and I am thinking about doing it. Has anyone done one before? Obviously it is for a great cause. Just looking for any first hand experience. Thanks!

Lynnda and I have done the one in Orlando a few times. We had a great time and thought it was well run. The crowd support was great and they had some nice sponsors that gave some decent gifts. We would definately do it again if it was easy to get to.

It is a cause I definitely support. The event here is run more as an event not so much as a race. (No chip times) That said it is a fantastic event and quite inspiring. I try to participate each year in some way here. We have a wonderful turn out in our Greater Cleveland area.

If you particpate I look forward to your first impression.

I ran in the Race for the Cure last year...also in Cleveland. It was the first snow of the year and it was drizzling during part of it too. Ugh. I just remember trying not to freeze to death. Not bad of a run though. You are mixed in with walkers to start and 3 miles goes by fast!

I walked it this year in honor of my friend / coworker. It is a very good cause and it was great to see all the survivors in their pink tshirts and hats. The walk was great. Good luck!

I have never done a Race for the Cure but I am signed up to do a walk for Making Strides against Breast Cancer on Oct 20 so I guess its all for the same cause. A coworker had breast cancer so a bunch of us are going to be walking together. I am sure it will be at a slower pace then my training/race pace (even though that seems to be getting SLOWER instead of faster!!!)

Thanks for all the replies. When I try to sign up, it asks me how much I want to fundraise. It recommends $125. Do I have to do this part? This is on top of the registration fee. Maybe if I had more time I would be more comfortable with it...

I am a big fan of Race for the Cure. I'm actually our team captain this year. The race here in Little Rock is one of the biggest nationwide, with over 30,000 women running/walking. It's an amazing experience to be a part of. And you don't have to do the fund raising part. But I HIGHLY recommend the race.

Thanks Stephanie, I just signed up! Should I avoid wearing pink since I am not a survivor? (I like to wear pink for races ;) )

Not sure--but I do know that we couldn't use a pink t-shirt for our team shirts b/c of the survivor thing

I just did the Race for the Cure here in Portland on 9/23. It was my third year. There were 46,000+ participants. It's awe-inspiring, and as I'm walking with my teenage daughters, I always think that events like this might be what makes the difference in their lifetime. Pink is for survivors. You should get a shirt with your registration. As for fundraising, that's optional. When you register, there will be a letter that you can email to your friends/families inviting them to sponsor you, though. (That's how it is here anyway.) You'd be surprised how many people who aren't able/interested in walking are happy to support you. Go for it!!!

Wow, those are some big races! I just got an email from the one here and they are at 3,300 people.
