We love all things Disney, but my hubby turns 50 next summer and I'm considering a cruise to Alaska as a surprise. We will have our 7 & 6 yr olds along with us and possibly his sister and her hubby. I would love any advice on which cruise lines to consider, if there are any different itineraries, just anything would be helpful. Thanks for being such a great bunch!

MamaQuack, could you help me out, please? I am also considering taking my girls, 11 and 14, on an Alaskan cruise next summer. Any information you could provide would be wonderful. Thank you.

My parents went on Holland American last year to Alaska...not much for the young kids to do and they cater to the older older crowd...I plan on going to Alaska, hopefully, in the next couple of years and found that Princess or Royal Caribbean cater to the family group and have lots of different options.

ugadog99,

I will send you a pm right now.

floridaminnie,

our first 2 Alaska cruises were on Holland America when our sone was 6 and then 7 - that was 7 years ago - he had a blast! great kid program and the staff could not have been more attentive, affectionate and adoring of him.

Heidi, the Carnival Spirit also does Alaskan routes, northbound, southbound and Glacier Bay. DD4 loved Camp Carnival last September on our western cruise.

You can get much information and stuff on alaska cruises at cruisecritic.com.
They have very active cruise boards and you can choose line..port...activitie...first time cruise...cruise questions etc. Try there. If you know which line you would like to take, go directly to their board on cruisecritic and you'll get a wealth of information.

We went last June with our entire family of 11, including children ages 4, 10, 12 and 15. Sailed on RCCL out of Vancouver and ended in Seeward. It was a wonderful cruise but we were VERY dissapointed in RCCL. Our children loved all of the sightseeing. My two boys even caught a 25 pound King Salmon on a private charter in Sitka. That thing fought for a long time but they landed him. We had it cleaned and overnighted to Boca Raton. I call it our $800 fish! :D

We rented a float plane in Ketchikan (sp?) that was amazingly beautiful over the fjords.

Alaska is truly another world. I feel very happy that my kids got a chance to experience it so young. They were enchanted.

One thing, make sure you travel a day early (at least) because if you are from the east coast the jet lag will be difficult. We spent two days pre-cruise in Vancouver and the city was amazing!

Lookingforward:

I would be interested to know why you were disappionted in RCCL? I have been on 3 of their ships and enjoyed them all. Were you comparing it to DCL? Was it the Kids Program? I am very interested because my family is considering an Alaska cruise.

Yes, I'd like to know what was dissappointing about RCCL, too, as they are on our list of lines to consider. Thanks to all of you for any advice and keep it coming!

We just returned on Sunday from an Alaskan Cruise. We cruised on RCCL on the Serenade of the Seas.

Alaska is a wonderful vacation and I would highly recommend it to anyone. I did feel like three days on the ship was to long so make sure you look at the itinerary.

The ship was beautiful and the food was ok. I really like rotating rest. as we do on Disney. I really think Disney is missing the boat here because there were alot of kids on our cruise. This is becoming a very popular vacation for families.

My daugher was 12 and they did have activities for them but they were not structured for her age group as they are for the younger ones. She pretty much just ran around with friends while on the ship.

I also recommend arriving a day or two earlier.

You will not regret going on this cruise.

MamaQuack...

Just one more request for info for the Alaska cruise. I am thinking of doing the same with my Husbands extended family next summer. The youngest child would be 11. Is Holland America kid friendly and do they appreciate the family experience? I would appreciate your point of view. I believe we will be sailing together on 7/24, so maybe we could chat about it then!

We sailed on the Legend of the Seas. I can't compare to DCL because we have not sailed DCL yet (SEPT!!!!). We have sailed on RCCL Voyager which we enjoyed.

The Legend was a medium size ship. It was older and we booked Cat B suites which were the second nicest cabins you could buy. The furniture was worn and our room steward was beyond rude. We had three B cabins in a row and my sister and I had the same steward, our parents had someone else. He was extremely rude to ALL of us, and I have to say that I am a very undemanding person. My kids would say "good morning" and he would glare at them. We complained because the room was hardly cleaned every day but nothing was done.

When we boarded they had our family of eleven at three different tables. We had booked this cruise 16 months ahead. They had my daughter (age 4) at a table of six with no other family member. We asked the dining manager as soon as we discovered this, to change it. He stated "Come back at 5 p.m. and I will try..but there may be nothing I can do". So I said to him "well I hope the five people my daughter is dining with won't mind cutting her meat for her". He was beyond rude. My sister, who is a diamond repeat passenger, went to the hotel manager and he finally took care of it. But the point was that we had to scurry around for hours trying to get it fixed.

Our waiter was nice but meals took so long and the food was HORRIBLE. My husband did 26 years in the USMC and he can eat anything and even he was not pleased. There were a few nights that were okay, but overall it was dismal. They had powdered eggs at the breakfast buffet (they stated it was for "health reasons") The clam chowder was pure liquid. I could go on and on. Even the waiter would say "You don't want to order that. Try the steak, okay?"

The kids programs were not that good. The Voyager was amazing. The Legend was just okay. Nothing special.

But the final insult was the icebergs. The cruise itinerary included an up close and personal cruise through Hubbard Bay. This was on the last day of the cruise. The icebergs are truly the highlight of many people's cruise. It was listed on the itinerary as being from 8 to 10:00 a.m. Our entire family woke up at 6:30, had breakfast, and then gathered in my parents suite to sit together and watch these million year old icebergs. The ship approached the Bay and stopped. We sat there for a while. An announcement came over the loud speaker that stated "Please come up on deck 10 to see the beautiful Hubbard Bay". We were literally a few miles from the Bay. The ship never went in. No icebergs. No prior notice. People on the ship became hysterical. Keep in mind that the majority of people on this ship were older and this was a trip of a lifetime for most. Imagine hundreds of people bundled up with their cameras waiting for this magical experience. Then NOTHING. Later the captain put out a pre-printed notice stating that we did not enter the bay because the "sea pups" were there and it would be dangerous for them during the month of June. Sounds good, right? I bought it. Well, we were a little suspicious when the HOlland America ship right behind us entered the Bay after we had set sail away from it. Later I found out that the sea pup excuse was a lie. We talked to a naturalist who explained that the ships don't get close enough to the wildlife. The REAL reason the captain skipped the two hour detour was that he had to have the ship back in Seward three hours early for repairs. He was pressed for time. Those notes were printed in advance. And the following week I emailed some RCCL cruisers who stated they sailed into the bay (and it was still JUNE!)

Personally, if I ever sail in Alaska again I would sail Holland America, Princess or Celebrity. RCCL is okay but not for such a huge trip. Alaska is expensive and should be carefully planned.

MamaQuack...

I too would love to get the info from you. I have a dd12 and was thinking about an Alaskan cruise with her and my dh. It would be for our 20th anniversary.

Thanks for the info, and I hope you contacted RCCL about this! Your experience is unacceptable. I am a veteran cruiser (12 cuises) and my parents have been on 40 cruises. If ANYTHING is wrong, you should write the cruise line and they may discount you for another cruise or even give you a free one! I have never had that experience on RCCL.

we did Alaska in 2000 on RCCL Vision of the Seas -

the best thing we did was rent cars in a couple of ports - Skagway in particular - we drove all the way into Yukon territory of Canada (bring those passports/ID) and saw much more beautiful scenery and a couple of small towns than those who took the train ride did (though I am sure they had some commentary - I had read up on the gold mining history as well so could bore my wife with the history of the area - our daughter was an infant at the time so the car worked better - young kids would no doubt enjoy the train (esp. if never been on a train before)

we did not do anyof the helicopter/float plane trips - but my nephews/brother in law did and thought them well worth the money - weather is often an issue so be prepared for cancellation of some excursions. they also did the fishing. we did Vancouver to Vancouver but would have liked to do Seward to Vancouver (or vice versa) - also many ships now leaving from Seattle which is an easier flight for many people (for example, we could fly nonstop to Seattle from Kansas city but not to Vancouver - though Vancouver is a cool city). Would highly recommend arriving a day or two earlier - if time, take a day trip to Butchart Gardens on Vancouver Island.

We were fine with the food on RCCL - and cabin prices are less than on DCL - but the food wasn't gourmet by any means. Our office manager just went on Celebrity and thought the food quite good. Don't know which lines have restaurant choices - RCCL is basically main dining room though newer ships might have other offerings. I would definitely recommend a balcony if financially possible - it was so nice to not have to deal with the crowds on the decks when we could enjoy the same scenery from our balcony. We thought the best souvenir shopping was in Juneau.

LIslander,

Taylor and I will be on the July 24th cruise. We'd love to chat with you and your family about our incredible experiences in Alaska - you can get two points of view. We can also tell you the differences we've experienced on Holland America, which is, very family oriented as far as the way they treat children - very, very affectionate and sweet and Celebrity and RSSCL. We will be in cabin 9060 and staying Friday nite at the MCO Hyatt. Planning on attending the 3:15 meet also. So catch up with us.

We did Alaska in June 2002 on HAL's Amsterdam. First cruise for our kids (then age 11 and 15), 5th for my wife, 6th for me.
We did the Eastern on the Magic 12-27-03.
HAL on paper has similar kids programs to Disney, just on a smaller scale since there were fewer kids on board on HAL. Can't say which is better in that respect, my kids toured the clubs on both ships, and read the newsletter everyday for kids club activities, but always opted to do stuff with us.
Food was great on both, and while the wait staff on Disney was better prepared to deal with kids, but only slightly.
I say go for it.
I've been on RCCL, NCL and Paquet as well. RCCL and NCL were great as well, but didn't have kids then. Paquet is a stuff small French cruise line, but that was a free trip. I wouldn't pay to cruise them.
Unless you actually cruise a line, it's hard to rate them. This board is great for getting a feel for different lines.
I've always perceived Carnival and Princess as entry level cruise lines, but I gather that Princess is more upscale now. I view NCL, RCCL and Celebrity and mid-level, and HAL, Disney and P&O has upper level.
