3 weeks ago, our poor pug started with weird symptoms, breathing hard & had a high fever 104.5. our regular vet was closed for the weekend, so we had to take her to another 'er'.
xray & blood tests & $$$ later they said she had pneumonia. sent home with 4 weeks of drugs. also told, should NOT worry about other dogs around her.
4 days ago dog #2 started coughing. called our vet. they said could be anything, but if kennel cough they like to leave it alone without meds. dog #2 happened to be with daughter on an out of town trip, got concerned took it to a vet & that vet said dog had kennel cough, & gave her meds.....
now pug had a very high white blood cell count, which vet said is NOT kennel cough ( but the pneumonia) & when she did cough it was very different from dog #2.
now yesterday dog #3 is coughing........ arrghhhhhhh

guess I'll take dog in monday, but from what vet said & what I read online they usually let it run its course.

now I am concerned pug & dog #4 may come down with this!

( btw all 4 had previously been vaccinated for kennel cough)

anyone familiar with this & have some 'happy' info they can give?

My dog caught kennel cough from my sister's dogs. All three of them were given antibiotics and were totally fine at the end of the course of meds. Good Luck!

Maybe it really is kennel cough, just one strain that the vaccine doesn't cover? One of our dogs had a very mild case after a visit to the kennel, even though they get the vaccine every 6 months or so. Turns out one of the dogs there at the same time did have kennel cough and a few others (like mine) caught it.

Is pneumonia contagious? Could they be passing some strain of that among each other?

My one Lab seems to be very susceptible to kennel cough. Even with the vaccine, he gets it sometimes. It is a terrible barky sounding cough that goes away on its own after about a week. I gave up getting him meds for it because it doesn't go away any sooner with the meds. Here is a good article about kennel cough:

do u vaccinate them each year because as i believe it it ony works one year

our dog has the bordetella shot every six months. Because she goes for walks with my hubby and also because she is boarded at a kennel for a few times a year while we do disney.....it is very contagious they say and for some dogs, they do develop other problems and older dogs could be very ill.

Kennel cough is a virus and antibiotics won't help unless there is a secondary infection.

My dog just had kennel cough. She was coughing for almost two months. She had been vaccinated (several doses within the year because she came from a breeder) but the vaccine only works on the most common strains. The vet did tell us to give her Robitussin and Benedryl when her coughing was really bad.

The one happy thing I can tell you is that the coughing seemed to bother me more than it did her.

I'm sorry. I hope they feel better soon. :goodvibes
