Anyone cruise New England/Canada?

We are thinking of cruising from NY/NJ to New England and/or Canada late this summer with family for my FIL's 70th birthday. DH & I as well as FIL & MIL have cruised before, so have many of FIL's friends (who would also be invited), SIL's and their families have not cruised.

We have cruised to the caribbean and bahamas but never north. I prefer the warmer weather but FIL doesn't like hot sunny locations so much. We are also taking into consideration costs - cruising from NY/NJ means we don't need to spend money on flying to/from the port. Since their will be kids going with us we also don't want to take a much longer cruise (plus increased costs) in case it would interfere with their school schedules.

Anyone cruise Canada or New England? What were your experiences? Advise? Comments?

Yes, we've done it twice and are doing it again in 5 weeks! We live in MA and just love to drive to NYC for our cruises. We understand it's not the caribbean, cannot compare it to the caribbean and go for the ship, the relaxation and the ports. Sometimes at sea can be foggy and very cold and once you get to the port, it's quite warm. BUT we have almost always seen whales and that is wonderful! Canada is beautiful. It's different and while it's not always sit in the sun and bake....we love it.

When you say very cold, how cold are you talking?

We took a cruise from NYC to St. John's, New Brunswick and Halifax, Nova Scotia about ten years ago. We went in the middle of July and had hoped for good weather. Unfortunately, that was not the case. We had some very rough weather (show was canceled because of rough seas), very foggy (fog horn was blasting every minute or so) and it was cold and windy. However, when we arrived at the ports, the weather was fine. We still had a good time and loved Halifax.

Of course, you never know with the weather. It could be beautiful, with a smooth ride. It's always a crap shoot! I would do it again.

Keep in mind that the port taxes are higher in NY vs say, in FL. Though it's still cheaper than flying everyone . As for the weather - it's hit or miss but the last time we sailed up to Halifax from Bayonne it was way too cold on the way up to be outside. The days at port were beautiful. The sea day back was sunny but very windy. The water is usually a bit rough when sailing in the northeast.

On the other hand - it's definitely a nice cruise and would be great to spend a lot of time with family.

Personally we enjoy heading south more but that's our preference. Which ship are you looking at?

I've done the St. John's, New Brunswick and Halifax, Nova Scotia cruise twice from NY. Yes, we loved it so much the first time that we did it again two years later. We went in March so the weather was not warm, but comfortable.

If you do go, be sure to see Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia.

We were thinking about sailing on one of the Carnival ships in August or early September, I can't remember which ship it is though

I'll admit I'm scared of the weather, the possibly rough seas concern me for anyone going that hasn't cruised before but I haven't been bothered by seasickness yet

We are cruising on the 5 day Canada out of NY on Carnival Glory this July. It is costing us $2500 for 4 people in a balcony stateroom. Can't beat that price. We are looking forward to it. Something different! Hoping it is warm.
