Anyone concerned about the Coronavirus in WDW ?

Another question for nurses: How are your hospitals/Drs. offices handling this? Have there been any meetings about Coronavirus response? Are YOU concerned?
In hospitals, healthcare facilities and doctors offices infection protocol is ongoing..24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 365 (366) days a year. They also regularly hold disaster drills and prepare for epidemics.

Wash your hands
Stay away from sick people
CALL the doctor, hospital or health department BEFORE you go in if you suspect you may have Covid-19

So far, the only real change is that we had to hide our masks because people were walking off with entire boxes of them.

But seriously, we have a new screening process that is similar to influenza/other respiratory illnesses. You get a mask if you present with fever and/or respiratory symptoms. If you are identified as at high risk for COVID-19 (ie via travel or close contact with a lab-confirmed COVID-19 patient); then we have specific guidelines that include moving to a private room/air infection control room, what type of protective devices to be used, how to assess the patients, etc.

Am I concerned to the point of cancelling our WDW vacation in 10 days?? No
Will I be washing my hands more?? Yes

We are also going in one week, probably not doing a parks a lot, already had the conversation about using disinfectant wipes in plane..... not cancelling trip yet, but keeping an eye on new developments. We usually fly SW but this time we found a really good deal at Delta, so I don't know what's going to happen with those tickets if things change, but our return flight is with SW, so not worried about those tickets. What we did different so far, is to book a car to drive back home if flights get cancelled. I'm a nurse also, so not in panic mode but worried, especially about crowds in DW.

My mom is 59 years old and has been a nurse for 21 of those years. She’s the level headed, logical, planner of the family. She’s not a worrier or hypochondriac, doesn’t act like news/social media is the gospel. In all she’s read from all sources available, including personal, and using her knowledge, she just feels something isn’t right and ok with what’s going on.

So we have decided to bulk up some stuff here. (I live next door). It’s not so much buying random stuff, she’s checking and buying stuff we already use so we have it in case we should have to quarantine. We went through meds and cleaning supplies and she looked at what there was and decided if that was enough or more was wanted. With food items she was looking at beans, pastas, bouillon that she could use with the meat we have to make different things. After we made the list, she went through and starred the items she felt most important and we are planning on buying that today. The items without stars she will leave and see how things are in the next few days. My parents live next door and I’m single/no kids. So if it came to it, we’d quarantine together.

I have a Disney trip with a student group that leaves next week. I bought a few extra “room snacks” than i normally take (because I am always buying Disney/Universal snacks). And I’m going to pack some Uno cards, playing cards, coloring books/pencils, and books. She’s concerned about my trip, but I didn’t plan it or have any control over it, so I’m not about to lose $1500 backing out. (Plus I WANT to go lol)
We always travel with a deck of cards and Uno, all packed in a circa 1980 backgammon case. On my second generation using these games as time passers. Bought a new Boggle set (lost some of the letter dice) this past Dec. and away we will go eventually:).

Proactive ..not panicking 👍

There are thousands being monitored for Covid-19 in the Northwest. There are probably many more affected than we know. This illness was prevalent in China weeks before it was revealed to others..lots of folks traveling around possibly spreading the virus.

If anything it might make Disney World more crowded since paranoia will cause folks to cancel cruises and out of country trips instead to go to Orlando. If this starts taking millions of lives y'all will have more to worry about than Orlando. My plans have not changed.

I’m not really worried about this virus per se. I’m more worried about us living in NYC and not being able to get basic supplies should any restrictions happen. We are more exposed to many different populations and people where I live than on vacation. I’m also concerned about visiting my elderly father this summer as he is very old and doesn’t have as good an immune system.

I'm worried about how unprepared the US is to tackle this virus. It's spreading 1.5-2x as quickly as the flu. It's far more dangerous than the flu and requires more hospitalization. Hospitals will find themselves understaffed in the areas specific to this virus. And the part that scares me the most is that a vaccine is almost two years out. That's like going through two flu reasons with at least 10x more people dying.

@Haley R, there certainly isn’t a lot known yet, but this is the CDC page on pregnancy:
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/specific-groups/pregnancy-faq.html
Since the virus seems to affect elderly more than healthy young women of child bearing age, that may help limit infants exposure. There are some natural immunities transferred at birth, so that might play a part. And of course, breastfeeding confers even more immunity after birth.

It is always advisable to limit an infant’s exposure to wide spread illnesses. The common cold, flu & RSV are huge risks to infants & can lead to severe illness. I am an RN in our regional children’s hospital. The numbers of children, especially infants affected & hospitalized with RSV & flu this year has been unprecedented. This is country wide, not just locally. So even tho Covid-19 might not be showing as high risk for infants, I would still take every possible precaution to limit the baby’s exposure to crowds or anyone with respiratory symptoms.
It’s hard because so much is still unknown right now. We’re going to wdw next week and probably won’t be back again before he’s born in April. Then we won’t take him until after his two month vaccines and only if the virus is being controlled. For now I’m just going to keep living like normal and washing my hands. There didn’t seem to be many people concerned at wdw. I did notice all of the housekeeping staff are wearing masks.

Absolutely! That unknown is freaking us all out. I have an 87 year old mom with multiple co- morbidities. All my siblings are local & we all care for & see her daily or several times a week. Three of us are medical professionals in hospital settings, others have daily contact with large numbers of the public. And we are in our late 50s to mid 60s. So we are all in high risk groups if any one of us is exposed. It is hard to not be concerned.

Then we won’t take him until after his two month vaccines and only if the virus is being controlled.

I’m sure you will, but I would suggest discussing your plans with your pediatrician & following their advise. They will advise on the risks of crowds & all the diseases around. So many of the infants that have been hospitalized this year are between 1 - 6 months old. The 2 month immunizations only begin to protect.

For now I’m just going to keep living like normal and washing my hands.

Great plan!

Wow, that is the first report I’ve seen about that. Not sure there is any science behind it, but it is interesting.

We just left today but almost every housekeeping attendant had a mask. I think all of the ones I saw in bathrooms had masks

Oh, I wasn’t even thinking about the staff in the parks! Just the resort staff 🤦🏻‍♀️. I wonder if they have changed to different cleaning products? Some can be very irritating when inhaled so frequently. Masks might help prevent problems with that.

I think it is more curbing exposure to bodily fluids in the bathroom.

Maybe. But bodily fluids aren’t inhaled. Masks aren’t usually used except if you anticipate direct splashing from bodily fluids or from droplets in the air. Even housekeeping staff in the hospital don’t wear masks unless they enter a room with respiratory precautions. Normal cleaning doesn’t expose you to bodily fluid splashes.

But they don't protect your eyes. Wearing a mask might reduce your chance of contracting the virus, but it's not guaranteed. It's more important that the healthcare workers have masks. The last thing you want is an already understaffed problem made worse by healthcare workers being taken out by the virus they're trying to treat.

Coughing and sneezing does. Let's be honest, people are gross.

Idk if they're taking extra precautions or what's going on. It was a little strange, though. Maybe it's a personal choice? I don't remember seeing any other kinds of CMs wearing masks, though.

There were so many people coughing all over the place yesterday and today without covering their mouths. It made me cringe and hold my breath

Local news last night made it very clear that only infected people need the masks. The mask will not protect anyone from getting it.

I read an article a few years ago, before Corona came to the forefront, that stated that wearing the masks are far as a preventative measure is actually worse than not wearing one, because the germs get caught in the mask fibers -
