anyone buy heelys for there kids in Disney??!

Please do not get them. They are dangerous to them and other in such a crowded place. We were at a resort two weeks ago that had a very formal dinning room. We sat down to breakfast one morning, (dress in the am is more relaxed but the dinning room setting is not). This child about eight is walking by and kicks out his wheels and starts skating through the resturant. I thought the waitress was going to croak!!!

I do not know if they are allowed in the parks or not, but I saw a lot of kids wearing them. I asked my son what they were because I had never seen them before.
The kids I saw wearing them were not abusing their use.

My daughter (9) got Heelys for her birthday in May - she alternated between wearing her Crocs and her Heelys on our weeklong trip in June - she had no problem whatsoever and we saw a number of other kids. SHe also wears them to school. She's very coordinated on them though. Just make sure you don't wear them when you plan to be at Animal Kingdom riding Kali River Rapids - your shoes will get soaked and they WILL NOT ALLOW you to take your shoes off. A friend told me she made the mistake of wearing her Birkenstocks there - she tried to take them off and put them in the "waterproof stuff holder" that is in the center of the ride - I guess it's meant for cameras and stuff - and the CM would not allow her to - she said WET BIRKS are no fun to walk around in! I would imagine wet - squishy - Heelys would be yucky too.

I think I'm the biggest dummy on the boards! :sad2: I'm always asking questions! Are heelys those shoes with wheels that pop out of them like sketchers?

Heelys are tennis shoes that have a rolling wheel in the back - it pops out and you can replace it with a plug when you are somewhere where you can't wear them. (my daughter never carries the plugs though).

Okay! Thanks! I was at a clothing store yesterday and I swore a girl was floating by me... :rotfl2: It kinda freaked me out until I realize she was on those "heely" things :goodvibes

My dd wants a pair but we've go 5 dogs, I don't think they would be easy to clean with dog poop! :guilty:

I dont think they are permitted. I know over here on Disney property, security will tell you you can't use them while there. The sweetpea got told she would have to walk and not roll in them, or take the wheels out. I assume they are in the catergory like roller skates and such. If you are getting them specially for the trip, i would check it out first and make sure you can use them there.

CMs have posted quite a few times in the past that they are considered roller skates and roller skates are not allowed in the parks. CMs who see people using them are supposed to tell the person that they either need to take them off or put the wheels so they won't roll.

I think that if your kid already has them and can skate in them, then bring them as an alternate pair of shoes. I wouldn't go buying them specifically for the trip though. A good pair of running shoes or Crocs would get more mileage. The Heelys - while fun - are pretty darn heavy shoes. I couldn't imagine lugging them around on my feet all day long. She didn't wear them that much. Like I said the Crocs got much more wear. Some days she wore the Crocs with socks - just to soften the walking. So did we - LOL! We were were there for seven days and we walked sooooooo far, I wish I'd have had a pedometer! My feet felt awful by the end of the week - and I had Nike running shoes and Crocs. I alternated as well.

Not to mention - Heelys ain't cheap!

No, my DD wants them but they are too much like roller skates and personally I don't think they are appropriate for too many places (notice how many places have no skating or rollerblading signs) - so to me they would have such limited use they aren't something I'm interested in buying - for Disney or anywhere else. I could just see my kids getting in trouble for skating through the halls at school . . .

Saw kids with them at Disney World though, had to dodge a few at WDW.

My experience as a Middle School teacher has turned me completely against Heelys - we had TWO students in our small school with casts on BOTH forearms from Heely incidents, and several others with one arm or wrist broken. I saw students crashing into walls and each other, as well as taking spills onto their knees or hands (hence the casts). Sure, some can control their momentum, but they aren't old enough to anticipate that other person coming around the corner or stopping in front of them. My school quickly made Heelys forbidden and there is no way I would let my children wear them in public - for their own safety as well as the safety of the "innocent bystanders."

I wouldn't allow my son to take his to WDW.

His Grandmother bought them for him, I think they are fine but not for everyday use.

I think there are signs at the WDW parks that say skating is not allowed in the parks.
I have seen chldren using them get stopped by security. Most of the time, no CMs might notice, but that doesn't mean it is allowed.

Most schools don't allow them, and with good reason. I think at WDW it is just SO crowded they would be a hazard, so I am pretty sure they are against the rules, and even if they are not I would not allow them.

I don't know if they are allowed or not in the parks. But if you do decide to buy them, PLEASE make sure your kids learn how to use them correctly. Here in MA just a couple months ago, a child was wearing them and the wheels did not go up. Well, sadly enough the child was hit by a car and killed. Just from that story I am against them. I know there are no cars inside the parks, but just please make sure they are careful with them in general.

I just got back from a trip to the mall where I saw a boy of about 10 crack his skull on the tile floor after 'floating' along in a very graceful and coordinated manner. Don't know what tripped him up but the sound was very disturbing and that was before he started screaming and crying. His mother was about half way down the mall and she didn't even know that was her kid yelling. She couldn't see him as a small crowd had formed and she was just about to pass him by when someone she knew yelled for her.

Why anyone would think these shoes are fun/appropriate for kids to wear w/o protective equipment is beyond me.

Just got back last night and we saw a ton of Heely's in the parks, restaurants, even in bathroom! Sorry, but as a parent, you really shouldn't be allowing your kids to be wearing these in parks filled with thousands of guests - guests who are little, handicapped, etc. I really was tired of kids whipping by me in the most inappropriate manners with their Heely's and their parents didn't seem to care that their kids almost ran me over or my young daughter over. They are not allowed, but as with many things in WDW, not much seems to be done about it as they are very easily hidden, so we saw kids and parents hiding them from CMs.

Sorry, but parents should have a better sense of social responsibility than allowing these shoes to be worn in such a place as WDW, mall or school where others can be injured.
