Anyone buy a formal dress lately?

I second the ebay idea. I have been scouring ebay for our upcoming cruise as I cannot see spending a great deal of money on formal wear for my family of 5 (3 kids who will outgrow the clothes before they ever wear them again.) I have found 2 long evening dresses for myself, a black suit, dress shirt, and dress shoes for my 9 yr old son, and 2 short formal dresses for my 6 yr old DD. I haven't done all the math yet, but I'd say I have spent approx. $40. on all of this.

Beware though, watch what the shipping charges are before you bid! I have been burned a little with having a winning bid on a different small item (a great bargain) only to find out S&H is a ridiculous $6.00! My fault for not checking on S&H prior to placing a bid. Anyway, I have also bid on a few other items on ebay and in the majority of cases have been happy with what I have received. Good luck!

At first I was just going to skip this thread entirely, but curiosity superceded common sense.

Yikes! THAT is some excellent shopping. Now I understand how you guys can afford to live on the TOP of the hill...

I treated my DM to a semi-formal dress. Old Pueblo Traders catalogue. One dress. $40 + shipping/handling. Until now I thought this was a great find. lol.

All of you are great shoppers! Anyone want to help me find wife number 2? JUST JOKING...

The best one I can come up with, BD, would be one young enough to be your daughter!!!!!!!! But she's a charming girl who I wish my son would have stayed interested in!!!!!

I have ALWAYS bought my formals at resale shops. They are so lightly used as to be almost new. Over the years I have bought a Neiman Marcus black suit for only $35 and cocktail dresses between $25 and $40. Look in the phone book for resale, consignment, or gently used clothing shops. There are even unusual sizes if you keep checking (call them or let them know if you need a special size).

Try shopshop.com! I was in a wedding in Feb, one of 4 bridesmaids (each of a different age and size, ranging from ages 16 to 36 and size 1 to 16). Do you know how hard it is to find a dress that works for all, in just 3.5 weeks?!?! It's crazy. And on top of that one lives in CA, while the rest of us live in MO. Well, luckily we found this site, the dresses fit just perfect, you couldn't hardly beat the prices, they were good quality, and they arrived within a week of ordering them!

Buckaroo's Dad:

We may live on the TOP of the hill, but not looking down on any of you DISers! LOL!

Hey, I think $40. for a new dress IS a good deal--you did fine! My great deals are real, but these were "gently used" items in very good or excellent used condition, not brand-spanking new as in your case!!!

Reason I love ebay--I just LOVE a deal. It's a little like gambling for me, I bid on an item, see if I get it for dirt cheap or someone else beats me! (Formal dresses were 4.00 & 6.00, boys suit was 8.00 and dress shoes were 3.99, little girls dresses about 3.00 each, all items plus shipping). Also, I take a gamble on whether items will fit or not because there ARE NO RETURNS ON EBAY!

too bad I don't find good deals on Dis cruises---what sticker shock that was for us! :D :D

I took my own advise an went to Good Will. Nothing my size but I got a blue beaded dress with Dillard tags (69.00) still on it and shoes that match for $12.65 for my 13 year old DD. Now if I can find something for me!! Checking resale shops today. We sail in 25 days!

Did you try borrowing a gown or two from friends or family. Some of my friends new I was going on a cruise and offered to pull some gowns out of storage, needless to say I now have quite a large selection to choose from and they were already dry cleaned and it didn't cost me a dime!

buzz&woody's mom,
I got the dress today from Speigel's ultimate outlet and I really like it! Plus it fits great which is always a bit risky when you order online without trying it on! Thanks so much!
Here is the website address:

I am so glad it worked and boy they deliver quickly didn't they! I am watching a couple of outfits on the outlet site but need to make up my mind :) Happy sailing!
