Last night I broke my pinkie toe!!! We leave next Friday for a TWO WEEK trip. I am worried that I will not be able to walk as we all know how hard Disney is on your feet. Any encouragement would be greatly appreciated.

I broke my little toe four days before our September trip to Disney last year. It did not slow me down at all. I was even able to carry my forty pound children when I needed to.

I got a special shoe from the doctor and used an insole to make it more comfortable. Just keep the toe taped so it won't move and you'll be fine.:wave2:

Plan on taking extra good care of your feet.

I would plan on taping the little guy to his neighbor daily.

Also allow time for ice packs on it every night. 20 minutes on 20 minutes off and repeat a few times. Since you'll be there for two weeks, when you have a chance to rest ice, ice, ice. That will keep the soreness and swelling down.

Also- watch out for hot spots and blisters in spots that you don't normally get them in. If your still sore, when you walk, you'll be favoring that side of your foot, your step will be a little off causeing those blisters to pop up in odd spots. Bring along the moleskin for those.
The first time we went after I had foot surgery, (about 2 1/2 months after) I got blisters in spots I had never got them in before. I also found it difficult to spend any amount of time walikng in sandals... even good tevas...

Good luck

Don't wear sneakers!!! I thought I was doing a good thing when I broke two toes and wore my good sneakers. The podiatrist told me that it was the worst shoe to wear. Get one that doesn't allow for any movement of your foot. My Merrills were perfect. Good support but no movement. Tape the puppy up nice and tight to his next door neighbor. Have fun!!

My DD broke hers before our trip in 2001. She wore the shoe she was given by the Dr. and had more problems with that than wearing regular shoes. She broke her pinkie toe too.

She tried to do a day with my two DN's and that was one of the problems. They were trying to do MGM commando style and she was used to just taking her time (that's what we do). But DN's hadn't been since 95.

After the first day, she joined us and took it at a slower pace and she was fine. If her toe started bothering her, we took a rest and then started again.

My sister also had a broken toe, but hers was the second toe and she said she wrapped hers to the one next to it and didn't have a problem. But I think the pinkie toe is harder to wrap with the one next to it and that doesn't give as much as is needed - puts extra stress on the toe.

I would suggest wearing comfortable but supportive shoes and take lots of breaks if necessary. (Even just stopping for a minute or two and then going on helped my DD)

Thank you for all the suggestions. I am icing, taping and resting. I am very big on getting to an EE park first thing and hitting all the rides before 10am then having breakfast as Pooh makes a 45 minute wait. I am not sure how I would do if I had to hobble around all the time. I feel worse knowing my 4yr old is trying very hard to heal my toe with a little pixie dust she made so we can make the trip. It is my 10 year wedding anniversary trip. :( Who knows... by next Friday I could be doing cartwheels.
Thanks for your help!

I broke my little toe a few years ago, just before we went to Universal / IOA for a long weekend.

If there's no broken skin, I would apply ARNICA gel to the toe, starting Asap, that really helps with healing. I'd stay off it as much as possible the next few days. If you're still in the first 48 hours, ice 20 min on, 20 min off.

I totally feel your pain. I fractured my metatarsal (the bone in the ball of your foot) this weekend. Our trip isn't until the beginning of December but I'm still worried (Plus I'll be 7 mo pregnant)

Hope it feels better ! Amazing how much that little guy can hurt!

Rent an electric wheel chair. An added bonus is that it will also get you and your family to the front of the line.

I just wanted to say good luck with your toe in the parks. I broke my pinkie toe 1 month ago. I had a hard time at work for 3 weeks. I stand on my feet all day. I tried open toe sandles, tight tennis shoes, but I finally had to start wearing an old pair of comfortable, beat up tennis shoes & keep my toes taped. It is now a month later and I can wear any shoes I want, but for work I still have to wear those old shoes because my toe starts to hurt after being on it a while. So I guess what I'm trying to say is wear comfy shoes and keep your toes taped and plan to rest once in a while. I still have another month until my trip, so I should be back to normal, by then.

I broke my middle toe WHILE at Disney. My daughter decided to stop as we were exiting the monorail to Magic Kingdrom. I was wearing a pair of Columbia sandals. My toe was sore but I finished the trip with little discomfort. Keep it stable and don't allow it to bend to much and you will be fine. The only pain I felt was when I took the sandal of and walk bare foot.
Some advil works wonders.

We had reserved a room in June at CRS, July 4th weekend at PORS, and July 13-18th at PORS. My ds broke 3 metatarsals and his cuboid 1 week before we were to spend a weekend at CSR. Even though the damage was his toes and ankle, the doc put him in a cast. We knew he'd never survive doing Disney with crutches and since Coronado Springs is so spread out, I decided to go to a medical supply shop and rent a wheel chair. It worked out great! Only drawback was pushing the chair. The ramps at TTC are NOT wheelchair friendly!!! We were permitted at the parks to park in Handicap Parking.

Are there any rides that you will not be allowed on due to a cast/brace/support shoe?? I just had an MRI and have a torn ligament on the outside of my foot and we leave in a month. DH has been torturing me by saying I won't be allowed on rides like ToT...evil man!

It sounds like we need to start a support group:)

I also broke a middle toe on the my first day at WDW back in May of 2003. I turned around and slammed it into the bed frame and I heard it crack - it immediately turned completely black and blue but after the intial pain, I was actually fine. I had a walk mostly on my heel because of the toe and then I got a blister that was more painful than the broken toe. Definitely tape your toes together as I didn't do anything and now my toe is slightly crooked - seems as I am a real klutz as I broke a pinkie toe the day after we returned home from that same trip. Happy to report no problems since - good luck with your broken toe and don't let it stop you from having a great trip and you have a whole week to heal so you'll be fine.

I broke a pinkie toe on my 1995 trip (day 3) by hitting the bedframe as well. I taped it then cushioned the inside of my shoe with insole and I think some moleskin. Everynow and then I would get a little pain but was fine for the most part. You should be fine and probably almost healed by the time you go.

I just broke my toe on my trip WDW (two weeks ago) at TL, wacked it on a chair. It was painful and turn black and blue. I was able to still enjoy myself, although it was painful at times. My biggest concern was having someone step on it, fortunately it did not happen.

My DH, who is not the clumsy one (that would be me), broke his toe as we were walking into MK on our first day last summer. All it takes is one wrong step!

We rented an ECV for a couple of days, but I made him get off of it to limp through the lines. We had traveled before with my mother, who NEEDED a wheelchair. I'm sure most of those who have special needs would agree--I'd trade any extra convenience offered by being in a special line for full health!

Consider taking lots of Advil with you--it's expensive in the parks. Of course, check with your physician first.

Good luck!

2 things:
First of all, 10 years ago, wheelchair users did go to the front of some lines - that was because the lines were not wheelchair accessible, not as a perk for people using wheelchairs. Now, most of the lines at WDW are wheelchair accessible and people using wheelchairs (power or not) wait in the same line with everyone else. These are called Mainstream Lines. AK and the Studio attractions were all built with Mainstream Lines. MK and Epcot have had Mainsteam access added as attractions have been added or renovated.

Second, the motorized mobility devices you can rent in the parks are ecvs or electric scooters, not electric (power) wheelchairs. I mention this because some people have written that they asked to rent a power wheelchair and were told they can't rent one in the parks; some ended up not renting anything because they didn't wnat to push a manual wheelchair. What you can rent are called ecvs or scooters. They are easier to drive than power wheelchairs (which are driven with a joystick which controls a computerized drive system). Some of the off-site places will rent power wheelchairs, but only to people who use one at home (and don't want, or can't travel with it).

Your DH has been torturing you.
WDW won't forbid you from going on any rides. They put the warnings out there and then it's up to you to decide whether or not the ride is appropriate for you. You should probably talk to your doctor and see if there are any types of rides that would not be recommended for you.

I broke my toe THE DAY before I went to Disney. I wore sandals because it was so swollen. I think I walked it numb, because it didn't bother me majorly until we got home. We got home on 10/6 and it STILL hurts!

Yes can ride the rides with a cast. I know I did when I broke my ankle. It depends on your comfort level.
