The Catholic Church has a conversion process called RCIA. The adults generally go through a year long process and are initiated into the church during the Easter Vigil (Saturday night Mass before Easter Sunday). Quite often there are adults that have never been baptized. The Catholic church recognizes a baptism in any faith so not all adults do this but usually there are one or two.
My church too baptizes adults. It really is a blessing to see adults who chose to follow Christ in the act of baptism. Go for it! Don't be nervous. Know that you are acting in obedience to God not trying to impress anyone in the congregation. I was baptized at 14 and I was so nervous to be in front of everyone but Im so glad I did it.
Good luck, OP! While I can't share your faith, I hope you find real joy and meaning in both the coming baptism and in your faith. Don't worry what others will "think" (actually, most of them will probably be very happy for you and thrilled that you're joining the congregation!). I know my parents attend (and I was raised in) a church that practices adult immersion baptism, and they are truly moved when other adults are baptised before the church congregation.
Yep sure was. I had to get dunked in the river because both the Pastor and I are larger guys and if We both got into the Church's Baptism pool the Choir would have ended up getting wet :lmao True story, I was baptized in the Satillia River. The morning of the event you could walk across the river and not get your knees wet. By 1pm it had risen to chest deep, I was Baptised and by that evening the water had gone back down again. God is truly Good!!
I have been baptised three times as an adult (I wonder if that is a record?). One sprinkling and two immersions, I was never baptised as a child. I didn't have to do it three times when I joined the churches, but I wanted to, a birth and renewel for me. I never felt weird about it, nor did the ministers who knew my religous background, but my family thought it was a little excessive.....just the third one I think.
I was baptized as a baby but when I switched denominations I was baptized again at the age of 18. It isn't really a big deal since only people old enough to consent are baptized in our church and no infants or young children. I am also not shy, I'd get up and give a speech in front of 50,000 people if I had to without a problem so that wasn't an issue.
Thanks! You all are making me feel a lot more comfortable with the whole thing. My church isn't one that often does adult baptisms; in fact, I've never seen one done. That's one reason I'm nervous. But it's something I feel strongly about it, so I'm going to try and just focus on God and do what I feel He wants me to do.
