The idea of a paid forum kinda baffles me...but I'm not sure where to go to start learning more.

I never heard of clickinmamas website but I dont know if I would pay to belong to a forum. What is it you are looking to learn? There is a wealth of information right here on the DIS if you look thru past threads. Or if you are wanting to know about something specific just start a thread and ask away. The people here are the friendliest, most informative, and helpful bunch of photographers on the web IMHO. We have everything from first day with your camera beginners to well seasoned advanced amateurs and professionals participating. The best part is the very non judgemental just for fun lets all learn together attitude with everyone here. :yay::woohoo::yay::woohoo:

To be honest, I don't know enough to know what I don't know. I've just wanted a digital SLR for a long time mostly due to shutter speed and now I want to play with some of the more advanced features. I have looked at tons of books- That site drew my attention with some cool pictures and the fact that they are having a 'beginner's workshop.'Maybe I will just start digging through some old threads. Thanks!

Yes, you can definitely learn quite a bit by following the various threads on here. Also, Google digital photgraphy and you will find loads of free information on various subjects.

If you are a reader check out "Understanding Exposure" by Bryan Peterson.

I've seen people getting others to try and join them on the digi scrapping boards. I've asked to be able to check them out for a trial period but they won't do it. I can't bring myself to pay if I don't know what I'm getting. Seriously, anything you want to know you can find for free. I've learned more on this board then anywhere else and unlike a lot of photo forums everyone (almost, lol) is very patient and willing to share.

Quite awhile back someone on this board suggested DPS (Digital Photography School) which has been helpful to me, especially with its wealth of articles on general topics and specific techniques. I subscribe to their weekly e-newsletter which almost always has something relevant.

As for a paid site, check this out:
http://www.kelbytraining.com/

You can watch videos by some of the "big" names in photography like Scott Kelby, Joe McNally, and Moose Peterson.

But there are tons of free forums to learn from. There are some great forums on Flickr also.
