ANyne know anything about OSAP loans (helping DD's BF)

My 18 year old DD has a 19 year old BF who seems to be in a lot of financial trouble. I will briefly say that for SOOOOOOOOOOO many reasons I am not fond of this BF but in the interest of peace and harmony DH and I are trying to give him some sound advice (DH is an account/financial analyst).

His family is a big mess. If I am to take what I am being told at face value...his parents are not quite divorced but have been seperated for a couple of years. He has been living with his father and Mom has not been in his life. Dad ran up his bills so high that he "borrowed" from son...sometimes with sons knowledge ei. ran up sons credit card, spent sons money from PT job and sometimes just put bills in DS name and then didn't pay them. So now dear old Dad is leaving the country (he is an American citizen, DS is Canadian) and running from the bills.

Can this boy apply for OSAP and say that he has no parental support?? I have looked at the forms and they seem to need parental income. Mom is unemployed at the moment but I believe she had a good income and lives with someone who is not penniless and Dad...well he is a dead beat.

His parents seem to say they will help him...and then they don't. then they say they will...and then that they just can't. Basically this kid is on his own. He will be in his 2nd year at Uni in September...maybe....he still owes for what seems to be most if not all of 1st year.

PS...BF is homeless at the moment with neither parent really wanting him....Estranged from Mom and Dad is living on a friends couch with no place for his son. The kid is living at a school friends house. So he isn't actually receiving any parental support.

I think that up until age 21 or 5th year of school, parental income is asked for on the OSAP application--that being said there is a section that asks your status--I'm not sure how this will affect him but I've heard of kids that have no parental support and still don't get OSAP. Go to the webpage and try to fill out the application with him(I think you have to wait till the end of May) and see what scenarios are there. If it doesn't seem to work for him, try contacting your MPP and ask for help. We contacted our MPP about a grant my son was to receive and she was very helpful.

Thank you for the advice. I had not considered that option. We will see how it goes at the end of May and we will try the MPP if we can't get anywhere with OSAP.

I have a friend whose mom married the same year that she was going to university, his income making her uneligiable for OSAP. Step father wrote a note saying "not my problem" regarding money for her education (he is actually the nicest man in the entire world) and she was able to recieve OSAP. This ofcourse was 10 years ago now, but its worth trying for him.


P.S. Im not looking forward to my when my son is old enough to date....

When our babies start dating it is a nightmare!!!!
She actually broke up with her train wreck of a BF today...but it lasted about 20 min so my happy dance was short lived.... I think (HOPE) that it will be the beginning of the end of this relationship!

I am trying to feel some sympathy for him but mostly I just want him out of DD's life...his life is too complicated.

I know someone that was in the same situation; no financial help from parents. He applied for welfare and started receiving welfare. He got OSAP.

I totally forgot about student welfare. Back in my day I knew a few people who made it through school on welfare. However, I think they had been out of school for a year or two first. Things are different when you qualify for mature student status.

I hear ya....there is someone I would like removed from my oldest DD's life. She pretends that the friend doesn't exsist. I guess she thinks I'm stupid and don't know about it. HELLO.....there is nothing she could even think of doing that I didn't invent. I'm the creator of all teenage deceptions.....just ask my mother.
