Groosch! basically...I think yer'll find that the cost of liv'in by FL standards is higher...the crime rate, lower..and the schools...very good!...at least that jurst my opinion :)

Colleges: Florida Atlantic University and Lynn University. Cost of living, a little higher because of the area. Nice mall called Town Center Mall near FAU!

My inlaws lived there up until a year ago.

It's one of the more expensive areas of FL, and it's quite congested.

I don't know that much about the schools and crime. I just remember a lot of traffic.:( :(

We lived in Boca Raton for 4 yrs. and it was a nice place to live. The cost of living is high, more so on the east side. There is W. Boca (I think it begins at Powerline Rd.). The roads are very congested in Boca. Since W.B. is not within the city limits, you don't get services from the City of Boca Raton. Their services are provided by the county, at least that's how it used to be. Many people consider B.R. a snootty place to live, can't say that I disagree. I call it the "Boca State of Mind".

I don't know anything about the schools or the current crime rate.

Here is a web site with good info ~

Good luck!

My sister owned a home there for a few years, sold it last spring. She didn't spend the whole year there (the company she works for has offices there) but had the best of both worlds by spending time in that office over the winter ;)

Cost of living-- expen$ive!!
Crime - I don't think the wealthy (for the most part) locals would like to admit it, but it's probably comparable to any small city. Not urban/violent type stuff, but there were some violent mall-parking-lot assaults going on last winter when we were there for a visit.
Schools-- she doesn't have kids but she said most of the people in her development with kids sent them to private schools.

Being a New Englander, I loved "living la vida Boca" ;) (as she put it) on visits....her house had a patio and screened in pool area.... It has lots of gated residential developments and complexes, and lots of upscale strip malls.

Returning to NH late spring my sister would sigh with relief at how nice it was to go to the supermarket here and not "battle the blue-hairs" at the deli counter and in the parking lot. heeheehe :)

Boca Raton is one of the ritzier towns in Florida. Some of the surrounding towns would probably be less expensive than being right in Boca. That said...it is a beautiful place.

For fun, I used the salary calculator at Realtor.com and compared Indianapolis to Boca (not sure where you live). That come up as requiring you to make roughly $54,000 in Boca to equal a standard of living if you make $50,000 in IN.

Oh, I'm not so sure about that JTB! ;) I'm sure he'd feel right at home near the ocean. :)

I just love the way you guys think the cost of living is high in Boca Raton. My mom lives in Delray Beach, and we've shopped all over the surrounding area. The prices are about 30% less than they are here in New York City.

I guess it's all relative (no pun intended), but I can't wait to go shopping there next week!!

Definitely relative! We live in Indiana now so pretty much anywhere we move is going to have a higher cost of living. ;)

Actually I was looking at Delray Beach yesterday... it seems a little less expensive. :)

Delray Beach might be a little cheaper. But for the difference, Boca Raton is a nicer place. You're right, it depends where you come from when you move here. Boca is a LOT cheaper than where we lived in NJ. There was no way we could afford to buy a home up there. If I ever moved back, I still couldn't afford a home there!

You might also want to check Deerfield Beach. It's just over the county line one town south. It's in Broward County as opposed to Palm Beach. Based on that alone, you may find some things cheaper.

Boca is expensive, that's all I know LOL (cheaper than NY, sure). I'd love to live in Delray, their downtown/beach area is awesome, but it's still too expensive. I think we'll be sticking to Boynton Beach (next town up :D Which I think is a nice area, but I'm partial. I'd love to move to Lake Worth, there's a community I'd love to build in, but it will probably be sold out by the time we can.
Have you researched home prices yet? I don't know what you are looking to spend, but that might really influence where you want to be. FYI, my auto insurance went down when I moved from Broward county to Palm Beach County, I've read that it's cheaper.

Right now I'm looking at condos/apts/townhouses. If they offer dh the job we'll have to move quickly. That will give us a chance to know the area before buying anything. :)

Thanks for the Sun-Sentinel link! They had 183 listings for rental property in Boca Raton alone!
