anybody going to watch "Amish in The City"

Wow, I got just the opposite from watching it. I should tell you I have friends that were in a Mennonite Church, and my parents live in an Amish area of NE IN. I'm used to seeing Amish, I've been to the Amish museum... I too felt that this was going to be exploitative, but for some reason I am too fascinated with Reality TV...

it was the city kids that blew me away, one was a Vegan and her opinions of eggs and cows was really different for me!! In the interviews with the producer he also seemed to be not trying to exploit the Amish, but to give us a view point many may not be aware of.

Moses having a near drowning was sad. It didnt seem like he knew how to reach out and accept comfort from the others. Then at night as he was having nightmares he turned to his faith, you could see that he recommitted himself to his faith, I found it very moving...

The city kids lifestyles are really in the extreme as well. But they arent actors, unlike many reality shows that do "cast" for stereotypes, this seems to be a very interesting group of kids. They werent given mood altering drugs or alcohol, and the interaction is interesting to me. I hope they learn to accept each others differences.

Didn't watch it and don't plan to...I already have too many bad reality TV shows that I just *have* to follow each week! ;)

I don't know why I started to watch this one as I haven't been interested in most of the "reality" shows, but I did watch for a while, then turned it off as I was not interested. I watched the one where they went back in time in England and another one where they came to America and lived in the middle of nowhere. I thought they were both interesting.

I watched last night due to the lack of interesting tv on the other channels. I thought the city kids severely lacking in manners especially when they found out who the other five were that were staying with them.

What I found interesting and moving was when the Amish experienced new things, such as a first trip to the beach. But the city kids making fun of Mose for his reaction to a life threatening experience was just too cruel.

The Amish girls have experienced make up and seem to be real comfortable in bikinis. They seem more real at times than the city kids especially the Vegan (can't remember her name). To say that she thinks that cows are extraterrestrial, what planet did she come from? Even the city kids found that to be weird.

I might watch again depending on what's on against it.

I found it much more interesting than some of the other shows that were on.

I'd just like to say in respect of vegans everywhere, This girl on this show that was vegan is NOT representative of most people living a vegan lifestyle. This girl was extremely misinformed about everything she thinks is reasons for being vegan, I'm more frustrated with the show for having her portray vegans as idiots that don't know anything about animals or biology, than I was with the way the show portrayed the amish kids.

As for the basis of the show, the amish kids (in my opinion) weren't nearly as exploited as I thought they would be (before watching). There were pleanty of times that I couldn't even distinguish between the amish kids and the 'city kids'. I also thought it made the 'city kids' look extremely shallow and intolerant, while making the amish kids look kind, and willing to accept different cultures and ideas into their lives.

tricia.

Did anyone else find it odd that one of the Amish girls (can't remember her name) had very obvious highlights in her hair? Since when do Amish folks go to the salon for a foil job? I'm not buying it. I think that not all of these young people are truly "just out of the Amish community."

Thanks for the link, Flaps. Now I can see I was right about them.

I was surprised to see Amish young women wearing bikinis. They seemed familiar with make up and had pierced ears too.

I just watched the re-broadcast tonight and I have mixed emotions about the show. My first opinions were that of disappointment and embarassment at how the Amish kids were treated. If that is the impression they now have of 'non-Amish' kids then that is sad. Way to be accepting of people's differences guys! Especially when they were all freaking out about them not cleaning up after themselves. They never stopped to listen to the fact that that is how Amish society works. The men are that way and the women clean up after them. The 'city kids' expected the 'amish kids' to just change all of their life habits in a day.

Having grown up right next to an Amish community in Western PA, I was a little bit surprised at the same things that stormi65
commented on. The girls especially seemed to adjust VERY easily to wearing bikinis and makeup and using swear words and having pierced ears. However, having been exposed to the Amish lifestyle quite a bit I know that there are varying levels of restricition between communities. We saw them shopping at Wal-Mart on a daily basis and they would get rides there in cars from other people (they just weren't allowed to drive them.) So I'm wondering maybe if these kids that were chosen have come from more liberal communities.

All in all I really didn't see a problem with the show (except for the meanness which I hated to watch.) I really believe that this is a stage in the Amish teen's life where they are supposed to explore and experiment and that is what they are doing. Personally, I felt it really made me appreciate things so much more in my life.

i want 2 c it, but i never know when its on, i have 2 find my t.v. guide!!!!:( :D
