Anybody ever use tour guide mike or touringplans.com

My family of 6 has been to WDW 3 times in 5 years. I first got a subscription to TGM free through my travel agent and thought, okay, I'll give it a try. I printed off a few things and gave it a try. Now, it's to the point where we would not take a trip to the world without using Mikes advice. Its priceless. He knows Disney world. Now, we follow his advice constantly, wether it be touring plans, fastpass advice or where to sit for a parade/fireworks (which for us is one of the BEST reasons to get TGM) Good luck on your decision.

There was thread on the theme park strategies board a few days ago about this that had a nice comparison of touringplans.com, TGM, and ridemaxx. Also, at the top of that board is a link with $3 off TGM since he sponsors the board.

I LOVE TGM & would have been lost without him! :worship: Tons of up to date info, best days for parks, timing for rides, menu's...everything!! He was a VIP guide for WDW so he knows it very well ;)

I have what is probably a silly question to regular TGM users. I did look through the FAQ, I just want to be certain about this before making any purchases.

My next Disney trip won't be until May 2009. Does this mean I still only pay $18.95 (board discount price) and I get to look through the information for a whole year ahead of time? I realize this probably makes me sound like a Type A trip planner. :rotfl:

I believe the answer to your question is yes. When I bought it, you could use it for a year or up until one month after your trip, whichever came first. My trip was so spontaneous that we only had one month to plan. He has a lot information on his website. I probably didn't see half of it, but his information was spot on. My favorite part was his crowd gauge.

I've purchased the UG and plan on bringing the touring guide suggestions they have in the back of the book for our trip next week. I went on the TGM website to take a peek - it's $21.95 to purchase his plan. Is one better than the other ? since I've already purchased the UG is that sufficient or will I be missing some real tips by not also purchasing a plan from TGM?? thanks

Wow, you're going next week! You will have so much fun. :woohoo: Have you been to WDW before or recently? If you have, maybe the UG will be just fine. I ended up buying both the UG and TGM. I took my UG with me and some pages I had printed off of TGM. Since I had never been before, I really liked TGM suggestions. As a newbie, I liked TGM because he had pictures of the resorts, suggestions on where to sit in the shows & parades, & tips on how to score extra points on Buzz Lightyear. His program goes by individual days too. Where UG might tell you the crowded park based on a month, TGM does it by a particular day. He also puts the current schedule up since Disney will extend hours on certain parks depending on crowd level. He has an easy "green, yellow, red" crowd gauge.

I'm glad I purchased it and would probably buy it again especially if I was going during peak season or on a holiday. Since my trip, some of the things I learned on TGM I learned from reading the Dis in the trip reports and theme park suggestions.

Have fun on your trip and welcome to the Dis boards!:yay:

Another person who loves tourguidemike! His plans are helpful and accurate.

another TGM fan! our first trip was last february, and a friend suggested TGM. We only had 6 weeks to prepare for the trip, and it was fantastic. I shudder to think about all of the time we could have wasted without TGM!

I've been using the UG and planning for about the past 2 months. I just learned of TGM today from a friend. So I have the same question...will I be missing some real tips if I don't use TGM?

I am an obsessive planner and I subscribed to both TGM and TouringPlans and just got back from our first trip a couple of days ago. Here's what I think. If you are computer savvy, TGM is a better investment because he must have hundreds upon hundreds of pages of information on every aspect of Disney. That said, I had a very difficult time navigating it. I came into it thinking that I would just plug in the dates I would be there and he would spit out a touring plan for me. It doesn't work that way at all. It's more like he recommends certain things, but you have to plug it in to a touring plan for yourself.

Now if you fit into a specific category like "Parents with young kids" or "Active Seniors" or "Parents with tweens". I think it is easier to use Touring Plans. They don't have long essays on every single thing at Disney the way that TGM does, but it does have about 20 touring plans that would be good for a lot of different interests. So if you're not computer savvy, and willing to do a bit of outside research yourself, Touring Plans is a better deal.

I'll tell you what I did that made a huge difference to our trip. I got a PassPorter book just for the maps. The maps in PassPorter are the best I have come across anywhere. They are in color and marked for everything. They will give you a clear idea of how to navigate the parks better than anything else out there. Then I got the Unofficial Guide from the library and made notes on which rides would most appeal to our family and any extra tips that would be good to know. Then I designed a personal touring plan just for us.

This is the best information that TGM and UG gave me:1. that you can ignore the expiration time on a Fast Pass and use it any time after it begins. And 2. that you should get an FP based on every one in your party's tickets, not just the ones who want to go on that specific ride and 3. Get there when the parks open, it will make a huge difference to your entire day. Figure out which attractions/eateries you want to hit, find out where they are on a map, make your own touring plan and get there early!! You will have an easy time at the parks, or at least a whole lot easier than the myriad uninformed tourists there.

We had 16 people in our party of various ages, so we made a Thrill Schedule and a Mild Schedule. Our FP volunteer gathered all our tickets as soon as we entered the parks, and then we separated. The thrill group of 7 would immediately get two sets of FPs and then get in the standby line for a roller coaster. By the time they were done with the first, it was FP time for the other two and they would immediately get on those as well. There were only about 2 or 3 restricted thrill rides in each park, so the mild group would do about 3 kiddie rides. We would meet up in the playground of each park and then spend the rest of the day together. The thrill group usually collected one more set of FP's for some show or ride that we could all go on in the evening as well.

If I had to do it again, I think I wouldn't have bothered with either subscription. I got all the information I really needed from the books and Disboards. I did use the template for an itinerary from TGM, but could have made that myself. I didn't bring anything from Touring Plans. The color coded crowd days didn't have much effect on us, because which park we hit on which day was based on the pre-arranged activities we had planned (e.g. the Grand Gatherings Safari Celebration Dinner was only offered on Sunday, so we had to go to AK that day, even if it was red). But the truth is that the vast majority of people DO NOT arrive in time for the rope drop, so if you do, you are already ahead of the game, no matter what the crowd meter reads.

HTH,
Jil

I've been to Disney many times and used TGM for our January 2009 trip for the first time. While I didn't plan my days down to the minute (as some do), I loved the tips for what to do first, using the FP (and that they don't run out when the time is passed on your FP!), getting FP for everyone and being able to use a FP along with a parent swap, best places for parades, etc.

I loved reading all the info on TGM, and loved the little funny comments, and personalization including my name in the narratives. Just gives it that personal feeling.

With that being said, I've already re-subscribed for planning our December 2009 land/sea vacation!

Is there a difference between buying the UG book in stores and the pages on the UG's site which are for "Premium Subscribers" only?

Thanks :)

I have used TGM for the last 3 years for his plan on which days to go to which park. He has yet to be wrong!! However, I may try the touringplans just to try it. It is les expensive and I already know my "good" days for my upcoming trip. I just wonder if UG could give me plans on if I cant get to a park until after dinner. I'd like to know good strategies on how to tour from dinnertime on to parade time.

I used both TGM and UG last August. I used TGM to figure out which park to go to on which morning and evening. Then I used the touring plans from UG. Even though we were there in August (still very crowded), we never waited more than 20 minutes for any ride the whole week we were there. I'll be doing the same thing this October.

I used Touring Plans last year and there is a wealth of information. It helped me in many ways. We saved lots of time and were still able to see everything.

I tried TGM and frankly wasn't impressed. I've really enjoyed passporter, however.

If we are thrill seekers, will the TP subscription tell us anything new or can we just use what is in the book? I don't know if it will be worth it for us. We've been there 6 times if that helps.

I subscribed to both. We are going in August so I'm still sorting through the information. TGM's has more information than you could ever read through. Really, I was kind of hoping for a calendar that said go here this day and here the next with maybe a map of where to go first. TGM has wonderful info, but way more than I wanted. Touring plans at least gets you started. They have so many sample plans in their book you can build from there. My favorite part of TP was reviews of different attractions from different aged folks. Got a much better idea of what 10 year old GS will enjoy. They each have their strong suite, but Touring plans is much, much easier to navigate in my opinion.
