Our 16-year-old granddaughter is in Germany, on a 2-week exchange program with about 50 other high school students. They are supposed to be flying home this weekend, but may end up not being able to because of the volcano ash. She is so homesick, I'm sure she's bummed. But she's enjoying the trip too, and is keeping in touch with all of us here at home on Facebook. I'm glad the airlines are keeping safety first though.

My son is currently in Rome. He has been in London this semester on a study abroad program. He's supposed to go to Prague today and I am worried sick because I can't get in touch with him. I am happy though that the airlines have stopped travel. I will be much much happier when I hear from my baby!!

I should be on my way to Boston right now with my daughter and three of her classmates and several parents for a 10-day educational tour to Italy but instead I'm at work now, lol. I've had so many travel disasters during my lifetime but this one tops it for sure.

We told the tour company that we're very flexible and would do any of the Italy tours so with that they said there's a "slightly" better chance of being able to get us rebooked by mid-week next week assuming the conditions improve, so we're all crossing our fingers. It's school vacation week in the northeast so this tour company has 1000's of students and parents they're trying to reschedule right now.

Well, I live in Iceland and have no clue what travelling will be like in the next weeks, months and even years. Last time there was a similar eruption in the same volcano it lasted for almost 2 years. I´m supposed to be flying out to London in a couple of weeks but I have no clue whether I´ll be able to go.

NOOOOOO!!!!!!! I'm supposed to fly to Copehagen in 33(?) days! I supposed if all else fails we can fly in southern Europe and take the train north.

I thought about you when I first read about the eruption. How weird is that? Reading about world disasters and I'm worried about DISboard members?

Are you okay where you are? Do they talk about the other one that last erupted in 1918? How much of Iceland will need to evacuate and where would you go?

Thanks for asking! We´re o.k. where we are and don´t really experience any direct problems due to the eruption. Katla, the volcano that last erupted in 1918 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katla will probably be a lot more difficult to deal with when it erupts and many people might loose their homes. However, we should still be safe here in the capital, Reykjavik and luckily those in the most endangered areas should be able to evacuate in a pretty short amount of time.
However, natural disasters don´t usually give any real warning and therefore we are all pretty much on our toes, anxiously awaiting what will happen next.

My son and his grandparents are supposed to be in Germany right now. The earliest flight they could be rescheduled for is next Thursday. School vacation is next week so pushing the trip really is not possible. My son is a high school senior so he can't miss so many days of school. They are trying to get the whole trip cancelled. They've already put out so much money. I hope they can get credits or refunds. Very disappointing but it is what it is. I'd rather have them here then stranded in Europe.

Glad you're okay Freyja

How disappointing merrily! Hope they can refunds!

My dh whole plans got changed in like 2 hours today.

He was suppose to be flying NY to Frankfurt and then connect to Siberia. Now he has to go on Aeroflot:scared1: to Moscow and then on to Siberia today. It should be interesting. Last time on Aeroflot he saw black duct tape sticking out from the seats. Not a good sign of passenger safety etc. He is also suppose to meet someone from Germany. I dont know what that guy is going to do.

I´m sorry guys. But you see the Brits and Dutch have been asking Iceland for cash. The Icelandic alphabet doesn´t have a C however. So when they ask us for cash, all we can send them is ash ;)

LOL! Glad you still have your sense of humor.

I am glad you are okay that most of the people in Iceland will be okay. Property damage is not fun, but being alive to try again is all that matters.
