Anybody else think public pools are gross?

We are vacationing at Myrtle Beach, and we have been out by the pool all day. I *hate* public pools, I see everyone slobbering and snotting and doing God knows what else in them! DH and DD's have no issue with pools and spent all day in it. I sat in a lounge chair and whenever I got hot (which was often) I would go over to the shower (intended for use before getting in the pool) and get wet there.

Am I completely weird or what? I try to tell myself that the chemicals would probably kill all of the germs but I just can't get over it!

Um, well, there aren't any chemicals in that shower...so what about the people who go in there?

My husband is just like you. He won't even go near a pool, but he'd get in a lake or river!

I never even thought about this until both my old next-door neighbor AND my sister told me about their public-pool phobias. Neither one of them will swim in a public pool. I guess that it IS gross when you think about it, but I just try not to think about it. I hope that the chlorine kills everything!

It's not a shower stall, just a shower head on the pool deck. No yucky rubber thing underneath or anything, you just stand there on the concrete and shower off.

Yes, my son refuses to go in a public pool. We just returned from a 2-week vacation, which included Vegas at 103 degrees, and he never once went in a pool. :)

Yeah, especially when they're warm, and I'm not thinking like bath water. :crazy2:

I leave you alone for one hour!
I try not to think about it just like I try not to think how many other FEET have walked barefoot across this carpet. EEWWWWW! :guilty:

I never really thought about this and go to public pools and waterparks all the time. I mentioned that I was going to a waterpark to one of my neighbors and she thought it was so gross..... I don't get that.

I never fail to be confused by attitudes towards pools, even "warmer" pools.

Do they feel a lake is better? Around here you better shower off after swimming in the lake if you don't want to get swimmers itch. Never got anything of the sort from swimming in a pool. :confused3

I think public pools are fun. I don't think about what is in them but I know that there is a lot of chlorine that kills most of it and it's not going to kill me.... unless I drown.

We have season passes to our city pool...$80 and our family of 5 swims all summer. It is very nice. Lots of chairs. Sparklng clean water. A huge baby pool with fun features. We always say that if someone would just come around and take our drink orders, it would be better than a resort.

i never used to be grossed out by lakes or public pools, until one day i was swimming in a lake and a family of ducks flew overhead and proceeded to poop in the lake. i guess i never thought about that before. but now - i'd definitely rather swim in a chlorinated pool than a lake. yuck!

i don't have a problem with a public pool...Only once did i see (and did not go in) a public pool that was cloudy...that was scary..
Now, i hope this thread doesn't start making me think twice about it... :scratchin

Public Pools totally gross me out. The thought of all the people in the water and ew...it's just gross...

Yes I get grossed out by them. We have our own pool in our backyard and just knowing the maintence that goes into it and the testing of the water that must be done with the few people that go it in it makes me wonder.
We were in a pool in San Jose california at Great America theme park where the pool filter alarm went off. GROSS. At least they had an alarm but what kind of germies were swimming in there. I pretty much refuse to put my face in public pool water. I have kids and I can't really keep them from doing it but it does creep me out.

::yes:: The only time I've gotten sick from swimming was in a lake. When the doctor told me all the pain in my ear was basically from "pond scum" growing in there...EWWWWW!!!! I hate swimming in lakes now.

At least the pools get chlorinated on a regular basis. ::yes:: Sometimes, TOO much.....like when there's so much chlorine the water is slippery.....but at least it's clean!

We also have city pool passes. We live in a suburb. We paid $90 and have more than gotten our use out of them, and have 12 days left in the season (although I'm back to work that last week and doubt we'll be able to go). The only time I was remotely grossed out was last time we went, Aug. 3, they whistled everyone out because someone had pooped in the pool. They closed it for an hour to shock it and make sure it tested OK.
Now when I was growing up my parents joined a "yacht club" (not nearly as snooty as it sounds) even though we didn't have a boat--just so we could go to the pool all summer long. The county pool was a disgusting pig mess and my mom refused to let us go there. When I hit early teen years and went a couple of times with my friends I realized what she meant.
I have a much bigger problem with public showers at campgrounds, etc. I have to wear flip flops and never touch the walls. Totally gross.

No problems swimming in public pools at all. BUT I will not go in the ocean or in the lake. I saw a dead fish once in the lake and that finished me off.
