LOL, I have the same problem, I hate the cold and wear a sweater every day. This only adds to the static. I used to get embarrassed about how I built up a static charge but now I think it is funny.
If you do a search for static electricity on google you will find stories of people who have died because their static has caused their heart to stop. I haven't gotten hit that hard yet, but who knows.
I also have longer hair which because of static electricity I have sticking to my face most of the time. I don't even think about wearing a hat, why add to the problems? And sometimes I can get my hair stands up when I pass my hand over it.
I found a nice travel size static guard helps, I spray my hairbrush, coat, sweater and pants. It helps some.
I tried increasing my fluid consumption, and using tons of cream on my skin to lubricate but nothing helped.
Two years ago a friend gave me a gift he bought in Radio shack. It is a static collector. It is a plastic covered device on a key chain that you place the little metal tip to metal it collects the static charge and eliminates the shock going through your fingers. the only problem is that if you don't hold it completly on the plastic the charge goes up the device onto the key ring. I have gotten shocked many times. I use this device when I go grocery shopping because I build up quite a charge in the grocery store. I get shocks when I touch the metal cart or the shelves. OUCH!
Now this might be funny to some but here is a true story. Three years ago I joined a gym. I wanted to try losing some weight and thought the gym membership might help. 1 year at $59 per month, directly withdrawn from my checking account.
After my 2nd month the owner asked me to leave and refunded my two months and closed my account.
Whenever I used the machines (stair climber, treadmill, orbit machine, etc) I built up such a charge that I would blow out the motor. They had to reset the machines and input all the information into them. The manager watched me as I went from machine to machine and shorted out each one. I tried leather gloves, and spraying myself with static guard before exercising but it didn't help.
One fun note though, my kids used to love shutting the lights off in the living room and watching me turn them on. They could see the little static charge that would hop from my finger to the light switch. Believe me, that hurt! Peggie
