any way to heat the water in my pool over the next week?

I have a pool that is not screened in. I don't have a heater. We are having some kids over next Sunday to swim. Now...some kids have already swam (swum?) in our pool recently, including our daughter. It's *doable* just not 100% *pleasant.*

Is there some way to heat it a bit? I asked my DH if I could just start boiling pots of water whenever I am around the house and dump them in there. He looked at me and rolled his eyes and so I am guessing that is a really dumb idea?:confused3

BTW, the pool is a standard size...15x20.

I understand the answer may be "no" but just thought I'd throw it out there to the collective wisdom of the DIS!

Wait for global warming...

I am sorry to say but I think you are out of luck.

I've seen these things at the pool store that supposedly help heat your pool. Don't know if they work. They are shaped like bean bags and you toss them in the pool. I have seen them at every pool store I have been in. Sorry I can't be more specific.

Do you have a solar cover?

http://www.solarcovers.com/

We had one for our above-ground pool growing up and I think it helped. I mean, not that we knew how cold our pool would have been without the solar cover, but we usually started the swimming season mid-spring.

I see nothing wrong with your idea of adding hot water to the pool - just remember you have to take the cold water out and you'll need to adjust the chemicals in the pool because your adding water that is not treated to it. Is the sun out where you live enough to keep the water hot? Could you just attach a hose to your inside hot water, like a basement faucet or something, and run it to the pool?

I am so jealous of you even talking about using a pool in March! Our pool is still under ice and snow.:sad2:

I was thinking the same thing...I'd have to dig my way to the pool house.
Can't help you with warming up question...we'd just turn on the heater. :goodvibes

Go to a local pool store.

Hi MM! Why? What do they have? I am asking here so I can get a recommendation from someone that isn't "selling" me something. I will go to a pool store and purchase something, no problem, if someone tells me they know for a fact it will work! I am also wondering if someone has a suggestion NOT found at a pool store.

bkmetv-well, I am jealous of your heater...so there!:snooty:

ellen-no basement...but I guess the water heater is in our garage? I can attach a hose to it? Hmmm... I am not sure about that, but can look into it.

katie, I will go to that link now, thanks!

lisa-hopefully someone will see this thread that has used those and let me know if they work!

dejr-I can't wait that long! *sob* LOL, thanks, you are probably right.

I feel like I *should* remember how to calculate it, but I think it is going to take a ridiculous amount of hot water to warm your pool (depending on the difference between the current temperature and the desired temperature).

ETA - okay, I did some very rough calculations.

Assuming that your pool is an even 4ft in depth (I figured it might average to this), your pool has 25,485L. Assuming it is now 60F and you want it to be 80F, and assuming that your hot water is about 140F, you'd need to replace over 5000L of water (closer to 6000L)!

LOL, so *that's* why my DH rolled his eyes at me!

I gotta say...I don't think my pool is that cold. I don't have a thermometer for it, so I don't know.

Thank you for doing all that math! I sure as heck could not have done that!

I've been doing statistics all day, so it was a welcome break (of course, I could be wrong - I haven't done that kind of math in a while).

I live in South Florida. There are places that rent pool heaters for a party. Look in your yellow pages. I've never done it as I have a heater (I don't use it), but I know I've seen party places advertising it.

Editing to add: I saw after you posted you are in Plantation Acres. I didn't even see you were in Florida. I live in Southwest Ranches. If you can find a South FLorida Parenting magazine I know I have seen some in there. I don't look for them anymore as dd is 14, but I'll keep an eye out.

I'll gladly send you my heater as long as I can include a foot of snow with it!! ;)

Oh, I would love some snow, BKMETV!

mom21-what a small world! I will look for that magazine...my DD is 12 so I also stopped snagging it when I saw it out! Thanks!

crashbb-I can't believe all those numbers would be a "break" to someone doing statistics, but I am glad it was!

We hook our garden hose up to our basement faucet, open the basement window, run the hose to the pool and fill it up with warm water! It's better than boiling water lol!
