Hi

Just wondered if any Uk brides travelling to florida are taking their wedding dress in a suitcase or using some other method of transporting their dress.

My dress is a proper fairytale dress with a big skirt and im worried about putting it in a suitcase but havent really got any other option. Also will probably get excess baggage charge at the airport.

Would be grateful if anyone could let me know how they got around/getting around this.

Thanks
Jen

Hi Jen

Who are you flying with?
I'm taking mine on the plane (well that's the plan) and it's also a rather large dress. I did ask Virgin and they told me it would have to count as my hand luggage and can-not be any larger in size! However I have seen many brides taking their dresses on the plane. I am not going to take any hand luggage just my dress and if they have a problem I just plan on trying to folder it over a few times somehow.
If your flying with a charter company then you would be better off pre paying for extra luggage.

I used a special box that I bought from the shop I got my dress from. My dress was quite simple with a small train, so it fitted into the box without any problems and minimal creasing, which dropped out once it has been hung up for a few days (wedding was 11 days after we arrived). I took the box on the plane as hand luggage as I didn't want to let it out of my sight. Not sure if a similar type box would be an option, given how you describe your dress. I'm sure you will find a suitable option for your dream dress!!

Hi

Im flying with virgin. I called them and they said you can take it as hand Luggage but it would have to fit in one of the overhead lockers. Im not sure if mine would fit it would also mean the people around us wouldnt be able to put there stuff in there either cos i wouldnt want them squashing my dress.

I might call virgin again see what would happen if i got on the plain and it didnt fit in the overhead locker.

Thanks for your advise, its all so stressful glad im only doing it once ha ha.

Jen I feel your pain, They basically told me the same thing. Maybe if we get a nice flight attendant they will hang it in there closet?
I am flying out PE so i'm not that bothered, I'm sure I will fit it in if I fold it in half. Otherwise I will lay it over peoples bags if they don't mind.
Now that is making me wander how many people share a bin in PE.

When's your wedding?

Hi

I think i may just carry it on now thinking about it they are hardle going to hold up the flight and make me get off and put it in a suit case or tell me i cant take it on the flight.

My wedding is the 16th October not long now. I see you only got 3 months and a bit to go. Its all so exciting.

I spoke to one of the air hostesses on my recent trip with Virgin as i had the same concern. She told me 9 times out of 10 there is not a problem. She said they have a wardrobe in upper class where they can usually hang the dress, if there is not space in there then the over head lockers are usually fine.

She told me that the best option would be to get it packed as small as you can, that way when you turn up at the airport you can work out the best option.

My dress is pretty big also but it hasnt come in yet so im waiting to see how it will pack up.

oh thanks for that information i thought there must be somewhere they could hang it. I'll keep my fingers crossed and try that.

My dress come in last week and im going to try it on tonight so excited.

Hi
We flew Virgin. I put mine in a suitcase. I told the check in lady that I had wedding gear and arranged for me to drop the suitcase at the fragile items area at the airport, and they tagged it with about 20 fragile tags! It got there perfectly.
I folded it up as much as I could as I wasnt too bothered about it being creased as Carolyn Allens came to our room to steam it anyway.

I am flying with first choice and when i rang i was told to pack it in a box and take it onto the plan where the air hostess will put in with the captains. To be honest, i would rather have it where i can see it! I am sure you will have no problems taking it on as hand luggage.
