Any tips/hints for checking in on Delta?

We're flying Delta this Saturday for the first time in about 16 years. We're used to the SWA pick your own seats - sign in early - board early.
How does Delta work? We have out seat assignments, but I wouldn't mind changing them up if we can. I know that Delta Frequent flyers can possibly upgrade to business class before the flight (which might free up some other seats for us?) Does it matter whether we sign in early or not. We'll have only carry on luggage, would hate to have to gate check it.

Any tips?
TIA

First, you can change your seat assignments at any time by logging into your account at Delta.com. They have seat maps showing your assigned seats and what's available. If you haven't checked since you booked, I suggest doing so. It's likely there's been some kind of plane change requiring seat changes.

Delta boards in 'Zones' based on seat assignments. I think it's first class, then back to front... so if you have a seat in the back of the plane, you'll be among the first to board.

I don't fly much, but I've never had seats changed at the gate (I've never asked for it either).

As pp stated, if you go into Delta and click on my itineraries you will be able to change your seats if there are any still available. You will be able to check-in on-line and pay for any checked luggage at the same time 24 hours before your flight. Just go into Delta and at that time click on check-in. For our Aug. flight we were offered an upgrade to first class at the time of check-in. We took the upgrade and then didn't have to pay for baggage. It is really a very easy process and you shouldn't have any trouble.

Thanks for the replies.

I've been checking the seat assignments on a regular basis and they have become fewer and fewer. I've noticed even some of the exit row seats are gone now. About the only thing available is business class.
