Any Tips for Sensitive Ears...?

I myself have extremely sensitive ears, due to the fact as a kid I had many ear infections and had surgery on my ears. Due to this my ears are extremely sensitive to pressure, so they hurt a lot on the airplane. I have tried swallowing, drinking water, and chewing bubble gum, but they just don't work... . Does anyone have some tips...?

There are these ear plug type things called earplanes that help with the pressure, you can get them at most drug stores. I find them very helpful.

Just a warning about the earplanes, tho. I bought them last year in the airport, since my ears hurt so much during our first leg of a 3 leg flight. I spent our entire 10 day trip not being able to fully hear. I don't know if they compacted the wax in my ears or what, but they hurt when I put them in, didn't help with the pressure & ruined my hearing for the duration of our trip.

Our daughter had a problem with ear pain due to pressure on an internal flight so prior to our international leg we got her some Earplanes from the pharmacy. They worked a treat and she had no pain for the rest of our trip. I hope they work for you too!

Definitely talk with your doctor but this is what I do.

Take a Sudafed (psheudofedrin sp?) and or use Afrin nasal spray an hour before you depart.

I do both. I take the Sudafed 2 hours before getting on the plane and then I use the Afrin 1/2 hour - hour before and I have no problems.

You do feel the pressure but it eases as soon as you swallow.

The Earplanes work for me. Sometimes I still get that clogged feeling but no more pain and they clear up pretty quickly after we land. Found the best price at Walmart -$3.25. They run about $8-$10 at the airport. I always have some on hand and also take Sudafed night before we fly.

My mother swears by this also. Her ears hurt during flights also. The ENT can also place tubes in your ears which will equalize the pressure and can usually be done in the office these days. I think it takes about 20 minutes. Sometimes we have to have them placed for our hyperbaric patients. I do not know what the cost is for the tubes but if I was flying and my ears were going to hurt that bad that would be what I would do.
