Any tips for painting?

I have made the fatal error of picking a vivid orange/red to paint my bonus room...

It looks SO streaky! I have heard people say that I will need at least 3-4 coats, but will it really come out looking good?!?

Please, some words of help and encouragement!

Darker colors like red, navy blue, orange need primer and then 3-4 coats in an effort to cover the walls evenly.
It also helps to tint the primer the same color you are painting the walls.

How well hidden is this bonus room? Maybe primer? Usually a darker color requires less coats. Sleep on it and check it out in the morning. It could grow on you!


Monkeyboy, you are on a roll. The flowers in the bathroom made me very nervous. I just thought she was insane with the records and feathers!

Probably too late for primer, might have helped to use tinted primer first.

I did a dark purple and it looked pretty bad after one coat and good after 3, just keep putting on coats until it looks good.

My sister just recently did this to a room in her house. It did take her about 4 coats, but it looks lovely. She would fuss about it every time she was painting, but now she is so happy she stuck with it. It is beautiful!

My only tip for painting is for you not to let me do any of it. I have to have it all perfect so it takes me way too long.

Honey, I not only primed it, but put TWO coats of latex primer on it...

It was on newly finished drywall..

I guess I will just be painting until next year. Will be back to Dis then.

I have a beautiful shade of blue in my room. Really close to this color and it took two coats. I love it.

Just painted my son's room Bouncy Orange! Took 2 coats plus touch ups. We used a semi gloss over a flat coat of white that was already there. It'll be worth it in the end. My only fear is when he no longer wants an orange bedroom. Then the number of coats will take forever. Thank goodness for the end of prohibiton!

Yes, we just did my daughters and sons room. We used oil based primer on both rooms. My daughters colored is Violet Vortex (lilac ). That took two coats due to uneveness.

My son room was done in Ocean Tide (think blue like the bottom of a pool). We only needed one coat.

We still haven't done the trim/ceiling.

We repainted DD's room which was a lovely shade of red (we turned into in a nice Pooh Bear room with green grass and blue sky).

Anyway, we used KILZ for the first coat(s). Oil based paints cover a lot better, and this worked well. We had to use 2 coats of it, but it was PURE WHITE when done. It smelled bad and was harder for cleanup but I think it saved us a ton of other colors trying to cover up the red.

Love the KILZ. That is what we used as well. It is a pain to clean up, but so worth it. We had to use two coats for our bedroom.. but we only needed one coat for the kids rooms.

We have a huge 5 gallon of it.. and its done our bedroom (huge), two bedrooms (normal size), and still have some left.
