OP, please, please don't get so emotionally involved in your 2nd graders grade in school.

She will pick up (from you and dh) what is not only required but acceptable in regards to her grades and when to challenge the grade she thinks deserves. Let her have the opportunity to learn, grow, make friends and enjoy her school years without all the stress of "being perfect" for you.

OP, I do understand your concern. It's not the grade that matters, it's why they get it, and I'm guessing that's what the part is that you don't understand. I hate when these problems surface at the end of the year, by then there's no point of bringing it up to guidance, etc.

To attempt to answer your question, our schools don't even keep reocrds like that until high school (with the exception of eighth grade when you must have a certain grade to take honors classes). Most classes are chosen by skill level, not actual grade. They also do a lot with standardized testing (they do NWEAs, done on the computer, for anyone who knows what they are) and only keep records of those scores to track their growth. Every school is different, do you know for a fact that your school keeps records like that? They may keep those grades, but I think that the only thing a future teacher, etc, may ever look at would be the yearly average. That's what they do at the high school, very different than elementary, I know, but it's the most logical. There's no reason other than to see if they get better grades in the fall versus winter or spring. I think at second grade though the old teacher and new one would really just talk to each other about each student more than look at grades (I'm sure it would be casually mentioned that she gets A's though ).
