Any suggestions to remove musty smell?

I had some boxes of keepsakes from my Grandparents that I had in my basement (in hindsight this was not a good place for storage) and my basement got wet...now the things smell musty. I have a typewriter from the late 1920's and have decided to display it with some other stuff, but it smells...any ideas how to get rid of the smell? There were some books in the boxes that also smell...is there anyway to save them?

According to the lady on the Today show, put them in a paper bag with crumpled up newspaper and it will take away the smell.
