Any suggestain on what zero turn riding mower

Okay, you are now in my teen son's territory!!!!
We have been shopping for one.
This is his all-time obsession!!!!

Another vote for the John Deere Z-445.

You might not like our recommendations if price is an issue.
But, we firmly believe that you get what you pay for.

I can't say we would even consider a Troy Bilt.

My son has looked at Dixon, the special edition model with the Yamaha engine and the welded deck. Very low-profile... Relatively quiet... handled really well.

We have a Cub Cadet riding mower which has been great... But are not as impressed with their zero turn.

Right now he and my DH have about decided on the John Deere Z-445. (Thanks Uncle Remus!) A 48" deck. From what I understand, to get the good John Deere, you don't want the model that you can buy at Lowe's. They are not as good. They drove this one. And our neighbors have similar, maybe larger, models. They are very quiet and seem to be really great.

If you've got very much to mow you might want to consider the 54" deck, that six inches sure can make a difference. ;)

:lmao:

Are you talking about the ones you see doing large lawns or a zero turn tractor?

We went looking for the former and then bought the later.

Cub Cadet

My dad just bought a Troybilt zero turn radius mower. He said it was "C1" in Consumer Reports magazine. He hasn't picked it up yet so he can't comment on how he likes it.

I love our Kubota ZD-27, 60" cut, diesel, and an actual driveshaft instead of belts, although if price is at all a consideration it's not cheap.

If your going to buy a zero turn go ahead and but a low end commercial unit or a low hour used commercial unit.

The residential models you buy at Lowes/Home Depot are nothing more than a regular riding mower on steroids.

Most have a stamped deck - just like a riding mower
Most have hydro pumps that aren't servicable - cost a fortune to replace
Small tires - easy to tear lawn if damp or turning sharp

Commerical are the opposite of all the above and will last a lifetime (2000+ hours if maintained) for a residental user.

I agree with Gumbo go with the established brands such as Ferris, Toro, Hustler, Bobcat, Dixie-Chopper, Exmark, Kubota. If you want to pay way to much buy a Deere.

I am not a particular Deere fan.
I know all about the low quality models they sell at places like Lowes.
My MIL had one... (tractor, not Zero Turn)

But, if I am correct, the one my DH and DS is looking at costs less than some/most/all of those commercial brands just mentioned.
And, we do know people who have similar models, and have been very happy.

The lady that I have gone to do my nails before vacations... Her husband ran a large Lawn Landscaping business. She says her husband swears by ExMark.

Thanks for all the replies. DH really likes the Troy but I will show him these comments and any more that come today.

Troy Bilt is garbage (there's no nice way to put it). We've owned a few over the years...yes, a few. They broke constantly, but we had a budget that the nice stuff didn't fit into.

The problem with zero turn mowers is they start at $3,000 and go up quickly from their. I've always taken the attitude that I generally don't want the entry(cheapest) of something, if you step up to the $5,000 area it opens up a lot of options. Our first zero was a Husqvarna and it lasted a couple of years but it was almost $3,800 new maybe 10yrs ago and after having to replace several bearings on top of the deck and eventually the foot and mower deck wearing out about 6yrs ago we decided to buy a new mower. After looking at a lot of mowers; cub cadet, Troy, John Deere, ex mark, bad boy, snapper, bobcat, and others, we happened by the Kubota dealer and saw their diesel mowers (we keep diesel around for other tractors so it's convenient) and that ended it. Their expensive though ours was over $11,000 but they have cheaper models that are just as good of quality but we use it for keeping up our own acreage plus some rental properties.
