I am thinking about becoming a member of DVC. Will be going to check it out in August. Do any of you have any regrets on becoming a member? What should I do...or not do if I join? How do I know how many points to buy and is there a benefit to one resort over another? They are pushing Saratoga Springs, but I like OKW more. I'm sure you have answered the same questions before, so I'm sorry but I have a head ache from thinking too much! :confused3
Thanks,

I've been a member since I don't know when... '98 I think... NOPE, no regrets... except I didn't buy sooner...

If I were you, I'd buy in at Saratoga since you will get the extra 12 years to your contract... OKW often times has wide availability, so you could switch your reservation over at 7 months if you chose to do so... Or, you could forget that bit of advice & buy at OKW :) As for how many points you should buy, try to figure out what you TYPICALLY would need, then add thirty percent... That's the number you should buy IMHO...

If you are buying direct from Disney, I would buy one contract at the 150 level, and another for the difference (say you wanted 300 points, I would buy 2 150 point contracts). As time goes buy and you don't need that many points, it easier to sell off smaller contracts than the big ones.

What is the benefit of 2 seperate contracts vs one (or can't I buy 300 pts at once?)
Thanks for the response!

You can buy 300 points at once, but the advantage of buying two smaller contracts is that should you decide as you age that you don't want as many points, you can sell off one smaller contract easier than one larger one. Also, those of us with heirs like to be able to divide points easily amongs our kids.

We have two contracts, one of 230 points and one of 150 points.

I'm a new member, joined in June BWV. My only regret is why I did not by sooner. :Pinkbounc

Ditto about not joining earlier, we waited until 1999.

I have zero regrets, except maybe that I didn't buy some of my points at VWL, as it is one of my favorites (but I have been able to stay there at 7 months whenever I have wanted).

We jsut bought two years ago and LOVE Saratoga Springs..BUy it is lovely..The bus system was a little shaky when we first stayed but they had only been opened a month so hopefully it is betternow..

If you're considering buying more than 150 points, you may want to evaluate waiting until you're a member in the system, and look at current add-on incentives. Sometimes that can be better than just splitting your purchase.

We purchased in '93 and have not regreted it at all. Can't wait till we go home. :flower:

Hey, when do they do that?? Should I look for it in the mail? email?

No, never, none! Not one single regret, only that we didn't do it five years ago on our honeymoon. Do it now...don't be like the rest of us saying we should have done it earlier.

Like the others, I regret only that we did not do it sooner. However, it is not only because we could have been saving money (and not by staying at Pop Century like we did one time!) but rather because I would like our "home" to be Wilderness Lodge. We have Saratoga Springs and always have to wait-list our way into WL. Next time, I think we will probably try to buy resale for that reason.

Nope, not one regret. We couldn't have bought sooner, since we bought as soon as we learned about DVC, which was on the last day of our first trip. :flower:

No we have no regrets. It is one of the best purchases we ever made. If you join, buy your contract where you think you want to stay. Your home resort gives you the opportunity to book 11 months in advance. In the smaller resorts (BCV & VWL) this could mean the difference between you getting & not getting a room. Buy as many points as you think you'll need for the type of vacatioining you do. We bought 200 to start and a few years later added on 230 more. That gives us plenty of points to play with, we are pretty much able to rent the size uniits we need when we need them...we tend to go there in October & January a lot. There is no true benefit to one resort over another..they generally have the same or similar amenities. It really depends on what you want. As far as location...SSR is close to DTD, OKW is kind of close to DTD but not as close as SSR. OKW has a laid back feel. BCV & BWV are located within walking or boating distance to both Epcot & MGM, in addition to being close to all the activity on the Boardwalk itself. VWL is boating distance to the MK, a very serene feeling resort.

We own both of our contracts at OKW. When we bought our 1st contrast, only OKW & BWV were available. OKW was cheaper per point, it had cheaper dues fees, we liked the large room, we liked parking near your unit instead of always having to wait for the valet, we liked the sort of little "town" feeling it had. That's not to say I don't like all the others...I do and have stayed at all other than SSR. Other folks prefer being in one of the Boardwalk area DVCs, because they like being so close to so much activity.

Thank you-that helps so much. They are pushing SSR and giving 12 extra years there. It just isn't somewhere I want to stay. The rep keeps telling me to buy there to get the extra time and lower points and he will throw in extra points. Keeps saying I can still stay where ever I want. Was thinking of buyin one contract there for the benefits mentioned above and one contract at another resort. These are good problems to have-I just dont want to be foolish with my $$$-I'm a single mom andits so hard to come buy!

There is some great advice on this board and I see it over and over again is to buy where you want to stay. I have 3 contracts between 2 home resorts just in case (gasp!) I need to sell one and I have 3 children to divvy it up to eventually. Listen to your heart but purchase with your head. Good luck with your decision and you will enjoy many years as a DVC owner. :)
