Of course we are having company over on Sunday and tonight our vacuum decides to break down. We had a Hoover upright and need to buy another tomorrow. Has anyone researched vacuums recently? I need to get one ASAP and I'm looking for recommendations.

We just bought a bagless Dirt Devil. It's doing the job on all the dog hair in our shag carpeting. I'd recommend it.

Just bought a Kenmore Progressive - last years' model was about $70 cheaper - put it on my Sears card so we can take 1 yr to pay with no interest.

It works nicely. Bought it a week ago - vacuumed for 3 days straight - then put it away. Time to get it back out. Similar scenario - company coming - old vacuum didn't suck

We just got a Dyson. It works great.

I have a Phantom bagless. Definitely go bagless! :) It works great!

Tell me more about the Dyson please. Is similar to Oreck? I'm considering Dyson over Oreck. How much was it? Where did you get it?

Thanks

I'm in the market for a new one too.

After my last one, I wouldn't buy a Hoover again. I'm not sure what to buy. I've heard that Oreck is hard to get bags and other parts for. And my MIL has trouble with her Phantom. The belt on it has broken a number of times.

I am a previous Hoover owner (since 1983)--no complaints. However, we had hardwood floors put in all over the house over a year ago and I knew that the Hoover was not going to work (even though we have a lot of area rugs). I felt it would scratch my floors. The Miele was recommended to me because it uses actual horsehair bristles on the floor brush and none of it's plastic or metal parts ever come in contact with the hardwood floor. So, for $600 I bought the dang thing and it is beatiful. Now, when I go back and use my Hoover in the basement, it feels like a cheap piece of crap!! This thing has great suction and it is so quiet I can have a phone converation while using if (not that I do). With the Hoover I couldn't even hear the phone ring. It does have a bag but it just seems to hold a lot more and be not nearly as messy as the Hoover. It gets automatically sealed as you pull it out of the machine. It also comes with a HEPA filter and it is one of the few vacuums that is 100% HEPA certified. Most vacuums have HEPA filters but they aren't "sealed" so the stuff blows through the filter and out the back of the vacuum. This one does not and, if you have allergies, this little fact is important.

It took me awhile to get used to the canister, but I'm okay with it now. Can you tell I like my vacuum? Even if you have no intention of buying one, go to a vacuum store and try one out. They are really neat.
