I am a previous Hoover owner (since 1983)--no complaints. However, we had hardwood floors put in all over the house over a year ago and I knew that the Hoover was not going to work (even though we have a lot of area rugs). I felt it would scratch my floors. The Miele was recommended to me because it uses actual horsehair bristles on the floor brush and none of it's plastic or metal parts ever come in contact with the hardwood floor. So, for $600 I bought the dang thing and it is beatiful. Now, when I go back and use my Hoover in the basement, it feels like a cheap piece of crap!! This thing has great suction and it is so quiet I can have a phone converation while using if (not that I do). With the Hoover I couldn't even hear the phone ring. It does have a bag but it just seems to hold a lot more and be not nearly as messy as the Hoover. It gets automatically sealed as you pull it out of the machine. It also comes with a HEPA filter and it is one of the few vacuums that is 100% HEPA certified. Most vacuums have HEPA filters but they aren't "sealed" so the stuff blows through the filter and out the back of the vacuum. This one does not and, if you have allergies, this little fact is important.
It took me awhile to get used to the canister, but I'm okay with it now. Can you tell I like my vacuum? Even if you have no intention of buying one, go to a vacuum store and try one out. They are really neat.
