Any recent rentals with AVIS?

I'm looking for a rental car Aug 26-30. The prices seem really high now esp with National which I love for the ease of use. Have also used Dollar in Orlando, but they are high as well. part of our problem is no Sat overnight. Since its more business oriented, Avis had a deal with Mon overnight which we qualify for. I understand they assign your car in advance. Must you deal with everything at the counter or is there a program like the Emerald Club or Fastlane? I really hate the hard sell with insurance, etc. Any experience with Avis? Thanks.

Avis does have a preferred service that allows you to go directly to the booth in the garage.

That said, when we used Avis in 2005, we were sorry we had skipped the counter in the air-conditioned terminal, which had no line. When we got to the booth, it took about 20 minutes to add the additional drivers that we received free with our rental. We were sorry (and so were those other Preferred customers who ended up forming a line behind us) that we hadn't done this in air-conditoned comfort.

I don't think they pre-assign a car for you, because after our paperwork was done, we had a lot of discussion about the car. We wanted a full size, they told us they had none and we could have a minivan. We didn't want a minivan, so they found us a full size!

I would use Avis again, but have never found a great rate except when we needed additional drivers other than a spouse.

Thanks for the info. I'll be traveling with 2 21 yearolds, so no additional drivers. I'd much rather pick a car than have 1 assigned, so that is great.
