Any quilters or sewers?

Last year my SIL asked me to make curtains for my nieces bedroom. In the middle of the process they did some remodeling and added on a room next to her room and took one of her windows away so I had some extra of the fabric. Money is tight this year so I decided to use the print fabric to make a quilt. I did buy two other color fabric to make "frames" around the print fabric and make a quilt for her bed.
I had intended to make a quilt, but wow, that batting is expensive.
So I decided to make duvet to cover her existing quilt.
Now I see that the cost of the fabric to make a backing is going to cost me about $20. I have already spent over $30 for the fabric and supplies I needed to make the front of the quilt. This is not working out to be much of a budget, I could have bought her a WII game for $20 but this is something she will have for many years.
I was thinking about buying fleece and using that for a backing and then maybe tying some ribbon or heavy thread at each corner so it will be a throw that she can use all year long over the quilt now then alone in the summer.
does anyone think this would work?
The fabric I used is a medium weight quilt type fabric. The print is the same wieght as the solid.
Thaks for any replies. I am stumped.

First off you are not stupid. ;)

I think what you are planning on doing will work. The fleece will be nice because it will make it cuddly. I think the tying it with ribbon will be better than just using thread. You may want to add some all over and not just at the corners so it holds it all together better. If you just do the corners, thr throw may get out of shape when it is washed.

Whatever you do I'm sure your niece will love it. :santa:
