any plane crash?

This is what I have heard from ABC News in NY:

American Airlines flight 587
New York/JFK to Santo Domingo
Airbus A300 Aircraft
Over 250 passangers/crew onboard
Crash time was 9:17AM EST
Departure was scheduled for 9:15AM EST

mechanical. but since it was a long haul flight it had a lot of fuel on board thats the reason its buring so heavily right now. the more fuel the worse it is.

Too soon to know. Witness heard an explosion but not sure if that was the cause of the crash or the result of mechanical failure which caused the explosion.

Too soon to know. FBI and FAA take days or weeks to determine. Doubt that anyone here knows for sure this soon.

Looks like one engine landing on a gas station, which caused even more fire.

Preliminary reports are explosion/catastrophic engine damage/failure. Not ruling terrorist action out, but seem to be leaning away from it. All bags at JFK are x-rayed, both carryon and checked. If I was a gambling woman, I'd put my money on catastrophic equipment failure.

The plane had a basically full pax load, and based on the destination, it's safe to assume a full cargo load as well. The Airbus 300 has two wing mounted engines. The plane was climbing, not cruising, this with the above factors makes control of the equipment with only one engine dubious at best.

I can't vouch for this, but an AA Crew Chief (Mechanic) told us today that the plane had radioed back to NY that they were having engine problems and were returning to the airport. He seemed very sure that it was mechancial. (This was in the Dallas airport around 11 EST.)

Terrorist, mechanical, birds, rudder, now turbulence. Doesn't pay to guess or make assumptions right away, no matter how much of an expert you might be. We have to let the real experts do their work and hope that whatever it turns out to be can be avoided next time.

According to the news, the flight data recorder shows the jet apparently encountered 2 incidents of "wake turbulence" shortly after takeoff. Officials stated that this added to the mystery surrounding what investigators suspect was an unprecendented failure of the jet's tail section.
Hopefully they will be able to determine what actually happened. It makes flying pretty scary especially after the tragedy on Sept 11th.
