Bought DS (11) a Red Eared Slider today. Bert is really fun to watch... and he's actually very cute (maybe I'm biased). He has a big old tank in my son's room and he's swimming all over.

If any of you have kept turtles before I'd love to hear from you!! If I knew how to post pictures I would!

We have a water turtle. My husband found it in his office parking lot about 5 years ago, it was the size of a quarter. He's much bigger now, not much company but we love him (her). It's name is Oliver!!

We have a red eared slider named Shamrock (I guess I do now since I seem to be the only person capable of feeding him). Have had him for about 16 months now. He's in a tank with a floating Rock formation to allow him to get out of the water and dry. He goes nuts when I walk up because he knows that it's the feeder person!

We have a red eared slider named Lucy, we love her :thumbsup2

My biology major daughter brought home a turtle from her college lab three summers ago. "Margarita" now lives in our family room and has way more personality than I'd ever expected from a turtle. She loves to cliff dive, as we call it. She climbs up on her tallest rocks and jumps off (well, falls off, actually) into the water over and over again. One time she caught a moth flying over her, and she was so excited. She takes bubble baths by positioning herself in front of the filter. She's an entertaining little creature.

We've had a turtle for 11 years. Her name is Henry. She's a painted turtle. We found her in our driveway and she was about the size of a quarter. If you don't want the turtle to grow too big make sure it's tank isn't roomy. The turtle will never grow bigger than their tank allows. Our turtle is huge. DH doing not mine. Give the turlte some feeder fish and hopefully a few will survive. They will help keep the tank clean. Fish love turtle poop. We call our the Luckies.

What do you recommend for feeder fish?? The pet store said comets but I read in a book that guppies are better.....

Guppies are generally smaller. I used to feed my Volitan lion fish (salt water) feeder comets, never thought of feeding the turtle those, but our slider is tiny, about the size of a silver dollar. I feed him freeze dried bloodworms, which are actually mosquito larvae. No mess, no smell, sprinkle a few in when I feed the betta.

My son has a red eared slider turtle. Her name is Crush :thumbsup2 He has had her for 4+ years. She was the size of a quarter when he got her, she is now 8" accross. She lives in his room in her custom built 40 gallon tank. She has a dry dock to climb on and fall/dive off of as others have mentioned. She loved anyone who will FEED her.

She's beautiful!! Originally Jack named him Crush.... then Bert.... then Squirt... then Bert again. This is why he named him Bert.

There are usually 3 sizes of feeders at the pet store. My turtle is so big that we use the biggest feeders they have. For little turtles I would start with smallest. We only use feeders to stuff the turtle up before we go on vacation. Sometimes we have to give her 15 or so until she'll lose interest in them. Which is how we end up with the extras to help keep the tank clean. We daily feed her pellet turtle food. And freeze dried river srimp as a snack.

I had a red eared when I was growing up! His name was Fred. My parents found him at Ft. Knox, KY and mom drove all the way back in MN with him in her bra!

That was 1970. Fred passed away in 2004.

And he would have survived longer, but apprarently his diet of 34 years caught up with him. Who knew you were supposed to give him vitamins and minerals 1x a month? He ate lettuce and frozen minnows. Every few months dad would go to the bait shop, get 2 net fulls of minnows. We would come home, gather 3 minnows at at ime, put them in sandwich baggies, twist tie them and throw them in the freezer. Fred got a package on Wed and Sun.

Awesome turtle - loved that little guy!! He was even in my dad's obituary!!!
