I don't think that it was a sexual picture, I mean hold the presses, she is showing her shoulder and part of her back, what exactly is sexual about that? I mean let's board up the windows and lock the doors, we saw some shoulder!!!!

I totally agree and I didn't see anything sexual about the pictures at all, but if we want to talk about the state of child sex slaves and the such lets have discusion about those children that were taken from that compound in Texas, they found that at least 53 of the girls taken were pregnent or already had children and they were 16 and younger I think this is a more pressing issue than a Hannah Montana picture, or is the well being of these children not important because they don't have shows on the Disney chanel or because our children don't know who they are so it won't affect them so its ok.

Very good point, and relevant since someone brought up sex slavery of young girls in connection with the discussion of the Miley picture.

There has been an abundance of press about those poor women and girls. You can't flip channels, or read a newspaper without seeing it.

Miley is a young lady of interest, merely because she is a celebrity. Having only boys, I had no clue who she was until people here started talking of her last fall in conjunction with the concert problems.

It is possible to have a conversation about both items. That doesn't negate the fact that one is far more important than the other.

Per this conversation re. the photo of this young lady, I think it does more harm than good. Unless one is talking about career wise for her. I know pedophiles, and I am working with a group in India trying to help the problems of the girls being used. Far too many of the clients there are "upstanding businessmen" here. Pictures that portray children in a sexual way numb the sense to right and wrong re. sexual ethics.

This is obvious by the children at her concerts, and just walk into any store and take a look at the HM items for girls 6 and up. If she is going to continue to market to such a young fan base and capitalize off of them, then she needs to take the responsibility that goes with it. If she is ready to grow up and move on then she needs to stop marketing to the younger crowd and Disney needs to move on as well. I can understand her desire to grow and mature, but if she is going to say one thing and then do another, then she needs to be prepared for her fans and those that supprt her fans to have opinions and be disappointed.

Wow. Just WOW! I was watching Madonna as a relatively young child and we ALL know she has dished out more than Miley Cyrus ever will. (Oh, and I feel sure I turned out pretty well, in spite of being a Madonna fan) She did not ASK to be a role model, she fell into it. And whoever said that parents, family members, teachers should be role models...not some 15-year-old girl, hit the nail on the head.

I finally got a good look at the Miley pics. I don't like it, as I think it makes her look much less attractive than she really is, but I don't see the "sex" in it, either. Oh and I think the one of her and Billy Ray is just downright sweet.

I still say that it's time to be parents...if your child is VERY young, no need for them to see the photos, anyway. Vanity Fair is an ADULT magazine (and on that note, I could see being upset if these photos were in a magazine geared to children). Also, as the poster below my original post pointed out on page 2...if you have more mature children, this could be used as a time to teach.

I am disappointed, but my DD still watches Miley's show and listens to her music too. She has never seen the photos and hopefully never will. I agree.. if Miley takes a turn for the worse, we will not be watching HM either. The photos are just threw us a red flag of caution.

I think that she is a young beautiful girl and i don't think that the pictures should have been published in the first place. Like Miley said you never say no to that phortographer so she at 15 thought she was doing the thing she HAD to do . I agree that the other people that where there at the photo shoot should have stepped up , i say this because she is a minor.
All this will not keep me from letting my kids enjoy her singing and acting i still will let my kids look up to her.
My kids are not alound to see this magazine or the pictures on the interned so i don't see a problem in it .
All our kids do make mistakes in life it is just that the stars are publicised and she did apologize and i think that means a lot from her .
It is everyones own decisions of what they let there kids do about this but like i said it hasn't changed for my kids .

Okay, I do agree with that. Pictures that are sexual in nature do begin to push the line of acceptable and not. They begin to take what is black and white and push it into the grey area in turn causing people to "go further" per say, to make decisions because their baseline is now skewed.

I just don't feel that the pics of Miley do that. I don't find them to be sexual. But I don't have the mind of a pedophile.

nah...she just doesn't get it. The ability to see how others think and perceive is a good thing...It allows for empathy, instinct, and good choices. Obviously this girl's parents weren't able to make that leap either...OR they could, and allowed it, knowing their meal ticket, I mean their daughter's career, might get a boost, as she heads into the possibility of adult roles.

eta: btw, glamor shots for adults are fine. They are able (supposedly) to make choices for themselves...and they aren't usually plastered in VF!

I never mentioned Britney Spears or the "Britney Spears path" in my post. She is of no concern to me. My DD is not into Britney, but she does like Miley, and as a mother of a soon to be young lady, I do not approve of 15 yr old girls posing for photos that could be perceived as suggestive. Why would anyone want to chance presenting their teenage daughter in that way? Silly as it may seem to you, I would never want my daughter to view those photos as appropriate and acceptable behavior of young teenage girls. No... the photos of Miley are not over the top, but she and the adults around her know they have the potential to be perceived as suggestive. So for me, the photos are worthy of a red flag and give me reason to be more observant of her future choices.

No I get it fine, I can see how others perceive things, but I don't think that how others see you should be the driving force behind decisions.

Anyway, no one was on that set, no one knows what was said to miley and her family. I am sure that you've never been talked into anything and regretted it later, however I have and I can relate to her and the fact that I have made decisions that I have regretted later. Maybe you can't see it from the perspective of the parents and miley and the fact that we all make mistakes, no one is perfect.

I guess what I think is most unnerving is the fact that everyone is up in arms ready to ban Hannah Montana, blaming the parents when there was an admitted mistake like they have never made a bad parenting decision. Show me a perfect parent and I will show you a liar.

I understand what you are saying, but I respectfully disagree. We need to not only guard against impropriety but also the perception of impropriety.

For example, there is a SAHD in our neighborhood and our kids are about the same age. My dh travels for a living, so he is often gone. On those days, I will not allow this man into my house to get his kids. Nor will I go into his house when his wife is not home. There is absolutely no chemistry between us and I have no fear of anything happening if we were to be alone, but because others are nosey I strive to make sure nobody even questions my integrity. I also know pastors who will not drink -- not because they think anything is wrong with A beer but because they don't want someone to see them having a single beer and jump to conclusions that there was a few before it or after it.

I think this whole thing with Miley is along the same lines. While the photos may be avant guard or artful or whatever, they obviously could be seen as something else. Miley's fans have every reason to believe her to be a young woman of faith and purity because that is the image she has portrayed in her movie and at awards shows, etc. If that is the image they want to capitalize on, then that is the image they need to guard. If they no longer wish to portray that, fine, but they need to be prepared for the backlash as well.

As for my family, we will continue to watch HM. My girls know nothing of the photos and should they learn of them we will use them as a teaching opportunity. If I only allowed my kids to watch shows with perfect people on then, etc, they wouldn't be watching anything. I know I've made some whopper sized mistakes in my past. Thankfully, nobody is holding them against me.
