Any other "Kitchen Control Freaks" out there? (Warning....RANT!!!)

I don't like people in my way when I'm trying to do anything in the kitchen, but what's worse is that I don't like 'helping' in other people's kitchens either. I never know what to do, I always feel like I'm in the way and the more people there are helping, the worse it is. It's tough when we go over to someone's house for dinner and the men leave the room and the women are expected to stay and help clean up  Usually, DH takes my place and helps clean up while I go in the other room with the kids! I feel terrible because I imagine that most people don't understand and assume I'm just lazy or don't want to help. Well, OK, I will admit than I am often quite lazy, but still I'd be happy to pitch in and help if I knew what to do and how to do it without losing my mind!

Thank you, KimR, for posting my exact feelings! I don't like people to try to help in my kitchen when I'm in there cooking or cleaning. Though I appreciate the thought, I'd much rather do it myself.
And I hate to be expected to help in other people's kitchens for Kim's exact reason -- I don't know where things go, which dishes/pots/pans have their own quirks, which way you prefer things to be handled... so I try to pitch in some other way, if possible. I'd rather not do it than do it wrong, because then how would I have been help to the situation?
So my rule is, "Stay out of mine and I'll stay out of yours."

oh do I feel your pain! My MIL used an SOS pad on my Stainless steel pans and scratched the HECK Out of them!! I was so angry!

I too gave dh t he "death glare" and he came to my rescue with a " Mom those have a special coating on them..." Im sure it isnt easy on her either she must feel like she cant win now matter what she does to help but I *do* have a way I want to do things.

I'm the same way which is why I like a large kitchen. I love to have people sit and chat, but I don't like people to try and "guess" what I need done at that moment. They usually get in the way.

I have found that for people who absolutely MUST help, I already have something ready for them to do - like peel potatoes, or shred carrots and I set up a little "station" for them so they can't move around LOL. If they don't like peeling potatoes, they can leave. hee hee

Unfortunately, it would take a kitchen the size of a football field for that to work for me!!!!:p :p :p :p :p :p :p
