Any other families planning for a furlough?

I just received my furlough notification letter this morning. I will have every Friday off starting July 12. I'm calling it my time off award for being an outstanding employee. :rotfl: Got to find the humor in this situation.

DH and I got our letters yesterday...11 days starting July 8. We both have Mondays as our furlough day. This is going to be a hard hit, since both of our salaries are affected.

DH had a furlough meeting yesterday and was given final instruction on what to do with his staff. They got rid of the "strongly encourage to do every Friday" idea, so now they can choose any days they want as long as it is still just one day per week. They just have to clear it with their supervisor, which is DH. This will create more work and drama for him, but at least he can choose his days now. He is thinking he will alternate Fridays and Mondays, which will give him some 4 day weekends. Letters are going out today and Monday. When life gives you lemons, ya gotta make lemonade. :goodvibes

My husband and I are both govie workers, so we signed our furlough letters yesterday, and will have every Friday off starting in July ... as well as working only 8-hour days from that point on.

The division head wanted all letters out on Wednesday, but we were at orientation for one of our sons at University of Maryland ... just what one wants to think about -- LARGE college expenses with a decreased income! When the tuition costs were laid out, my husband could no longer hear what the financial analyst was saying! I just got off the phone with him and reminded him of some of the conversation that he simply did NOT hear!

My thought on it all? We are doing what we can by spending wisely, cutting out the fat, coupons even more than before, etc. But I know without a doubt that God has us in the palm of His hand. His will be done! ... now if I can only get my husband to believe, trust, and have the faith!

I'm anticipating my letter any day now, some of our providers recieved them yesterday. Looks like we are not one of the ER's that will be exempt. They will be dropping most of our 12hr shifts to 8hr shifts so no extra day off for me.

Wow, my DH and I are both Feds and, luckily, both of our agencies have no furlough. In fact, DH's agency has weekend OT. I am surprised that other agencies didn't cut discretionary spending to cover it. Although I blame most of this on the Congress and their Recover Act funding. I know my agency went out and did lots of hiring with these funds but then had to figure out how to cover the extra salaries and benefits with their regular appropriation.

The Navy was told no when they asked to cut fat or move funds around to not have to furlough. I am sure that other agencies were told the same.

Yup ours too. we have hardly any supplies to do our jobs either, its bare basics, and no hiring. People are dropping like flies to, and we can't replace them. I can't imagine this going on for another 7 years, there will be like 10 people left in our office. (the job I do, is made up of very senior employees....(age not title..lol))

I work in the ER and even our medical providers are being furloughed. Unfortunatley once the clinics start cutting back on appointments the patients will be referred to us.

My husband has weekend overtime for his office in June. We went from stressing out to overtime. This jerking everyone around is crazy!

Deb- at UMD you can do monthly payments on the Terp Payment Plan. No interest just a flat Fee. So you can spread your payments out.

Husband will be home tomorrow without pay.......and so it begins :(

Best of luck to you! DH took his first furlough day Monday. He'll go to Fridays starting next week, but has the option to pick different days each week if he wants to. I am just ready for the first furlough check to come so we know exactly what we are dealing with. We have estimated a $700 pay cut per check. Hopefully our math is wrong! :rotfl2:

Yep. I start the fun tomorrow. I swear I never thought it would happen. I thought our elected officials would work togeth

I start tomorrow. So frustrated & annoyed. Love being punished because other people aren't mature enough to work together and act like adults instead of petulant children.

Has anyone tried to sign up for unemployment? I have been doing a lot of research on this. My DH was traveling over the past couple of years so has been getting overtime. Of course all of his trips (which was his overtime) was cut in January. If anyone worked overtime and are cut to 32 hours per week, they may be able to sign for unemployment. My DH opened his claim today so we'll see what happens. Just wanted to let you guys know from what I have read you may be able to open a claim and make up some of the wages that you will be missing.

I know many people who have lost their jobs due to this and a few who are down to 20 hours per week.

Unemployment is not based on how much you lost but how much you still make. If you have a $52K/year job, that means you make $200/day. You will be making $800/week and not get any unemployment.

We were told that since ours isn't consecutive we can't get unemployment they at least limited us to 1 day every 2 weeks.

DH will be of one day every week. They also found out today which jobs they will need to cut from their office next year. Fortunately, most of those positions are not even filled, so it won't affect too many actual people.
