We don't travel much. First-time cruiser, and first time visiting Orlando (I've been to Florida once, but went to visit a friend and he took care of everything)

What if my 6-year-old is bored to death on the 5 hour flight down?
What if we lose our luggage?
What if the hotel we booked is awful?
What if I get sea sick? (or any member of the family)
What if our towncar does'nt show up and we miss the cruise?
What if we lose our passport?
What if I lose my child (or hubby)..or I get lost?
What if we get sunburned the first day and have to spend the rest of the time indoors?

..I could go on and on...and I'm driving my family crazy already.

Lifetime Florida resident and compulsive worrier myself - my reply is to the sunburn issue. Just keep the sunscreen on, and you'll be fine. My DD and I both have very fair skin, and we do fine out in the sun. Sunscreen - 30 SPF (don't get less) is a must for us, and don't forget to re-apply it every few hours.

The fact that you are on this board - you are a planner. Maybe not yet a compulsive planner, but there is still time.

I find that the better things are planned, the less things go wrong. And having thought of how you would respond to problems, you can take care of things now and not worry when they happen.

All of your questions are very good - just think through the solutions, and you will be prepared. Better to do planning now than be in a tough spot later.

Just keep reading these boards and you will be prepared. Everyone is ready to help.

Hi, I am compulsive about everything. First on that list is worrying...I worried about everything on our first cruise, so much so my husband was ready to cancel it. I think it is the mother instinct...Let me tell you that we are booked (and hopefully going) on our 4th in September, and I know I will worry again.
Just that I worry more about different things, cause I pretty much know how my kids travel, and they are not sea sick people, etc etc...I think we have to live with the worrying, although I wish I could change it...I now get insurance, incase of cancellation, or our friendly (not!) hurricanes....I seem to rest easier knowing that, god forbid, something MAJOR happened, we can cancel without losing everything...

So welcome aboard, fellow Canadian.. :goodvibes

by the way, this is a great place to soothe many worries...People here are a godsend, so things can be ironed out before...

As far as loosing your luggage- that is why I fly in the day before! At least there is a CHANCE I will get it back before boarding! My friend is doing the land/sea right now and she got into POR Thursday-well her luggage didn't make it. Her husbands came on the plane but her dissappeared! She finally got it aorund 830 that night-jet blue delivered it to the hotel. If she was on the ship the same day she flew she would have sailed without any clothes!

For the ride down we have a portable DVD player, best investment I've ever made. We use it for long car trips and on planes. Coloring books work well too. Two way radios in case you lose each other.

Relax and enjoy!

This is the reason that many people recommend taking 1/2 of each spouse's clothes and packing them in each suitcase. That way, if one disappears, both of you still have half of your clothes.

Ha! Are you kidding? There isn't a worry in the universe I haven't thought of and taken too close to heart. I'm constantly CONVINCED that everything will go wrong, but it has yet to do so. I've travelled quite a bit and I've never (knock on wood, as the repo cruise is in two weeks and I'm utterly panicked that something will go wrong) had anything truly catastrophic happen. And now, I'm going to worry that, because I said that nothing catastrophic has ever happened, that now it will. Grrr...GRRRR!!! So yes, I am the biggest worrier in the world and can greatly sympathize. The only advice I have is what my therapist always tells me. Just stop worrying. Seriously. When I find myself getting frantic, I just have to distract myself. It does work, but it's hard. However, it's well worth it as worrying now will make you enjoy the cruise less as you'll spend all of your fun anticipation time fretting. Take a deep breath and enjoy the planning.

What if my 6-year-old is bored to death on the 5 hour flight down?
He/She will likely get bored-there's no way around that. But you'll be prepared with activities!! A packback full of them --Disney books on tape with headphones & cassette player, coloring & activity book, cards to play Go Fish, books, travel size Magna Doodle.....

If you can afford to spend another $150 then go buy a portable DVD player and bring some Disney DVDs to watch...a new one that the child hasn't seen yet was be awesome. Hopefully, your flight is in the morning when a 6 year old is at their best rather than in the evening. Prior to my toddler traveling when always prepped him by asking him "What do you do on the airplane?" and the prepared answer we trained him to say was "Be Quiet and don't kick the seat in front of you".

What if we lose our luggage?
That is highly unlikely. I travel A LOT and it has NEVER happend to me. Have any MUST-HAVE medicines & some spare undies in your carry-on bag just in case and then don't worry about it. If the worse happens, you'll deal with it and have a story to tell your friends back home. Try to look at all travel traumas as adventures!

What if the hotel we booked is awful?
If you get to your room & it is horrible immediately call the front desk & ask to be moved to a different room. If that doesn't work out then pull out your laptop or the phone book and start calling around to make new arrangements to stay elsewhere. There is a HUGE number of hotels in the Disney area and you will find something that is acceptable to you. And remember...it is an adventure!

What if I get sea sick? (or any member of the family)
There is free Bonine at the Medical Center on Deck 1 that you can pick up at anytime if needed. If none of you usually get motion sick in a car then you likely won't on the ship either.

Our 5 year old son got an ear infection on our last trip to WDW and we had to go to the Emergency Room and reschedule our flight for 2 days later. Nope, it wasn't fun but we got through it but we made the best of it. The departure of that trip wasn't much smoother...The morning that we were leaving I had my 11 year old daughter pee in a cup & Grandpa dropped it off at the medical clinic lab just after dropping us off at the airport. Our DR called in the needed prescription to Walgreens in Kissimmee (we learned there are several of them on the main street!). We had to alter our park plans due to both kids being somewhat sick. We rented a boat at Boardwalk and still had some fun though. We pulled out the laptop and did a priceline bid to find an inexpensive place to stay for the extra nights.

What if our towncar does'nt show up and we miss the cruise?
Even if it doesn't show up -you won't miss the cruise! You will have the phone number pre-programed in your cell phone or written down somewhere so you can easily call the towncar company to see where they are or a replacement company if needed. You just deal with it and don't stress out about it. Act silly to your six year old and joke about it being lost.

What if we lose our passport?
You WON'T. It just will NOT happen. It will be in a special secure place and right where you need it when you need it. You'll have all your documents completed in advance and will be ready to go.

What if I lose my child (or hubby)..or I get lost?
Make a mental note of what color shirt you dress your child (& hubby!) each morning to make it easier to look for them later. Instruct your child that if he can't see Mom or Dad to STOP & stay where he is & you'll find him. Also to only talk to cast-members that work there if help is needed. Being that you are a worrier-you will keep a close eye and no one will be lost for long! I often wander off from my husband and we have found that two-way family radios are awesome/easy way to find each other again. As soon as I come out of the bathroom I'll call on the radio & ask where he is. Our 11 year old has a radio with her when she's out playing in the neighborhood at home in the summer so that I can reach her to check on her too.

What if we get sunburned the first day and have to spend the rest of the time indoors?
We like the sunscreen that you spray on the best. Put it on first thing in the morning while you are getting dressed and bring it along too. Getting sunburned is no fun- you feel sick & awful. Prevention is the key.

R E L A X ......E N J O Y.....you will have a great time!!! My husband and I have learned that if we let a travel "adventures" stress us out that it upsets the children and if we calm down and take problems in stride than our kids do too. Hope this was helpful to you! We are busy packing this weekend. We are doing our first Disney cruise May 8-12.

:flower: Not only do you need a portable dvd player...but the Easter Bunny brought both of our children (DD 8 and DS 6) Nintendo Game Boys for Easter this year.....in 100% anticipation of a 6 hour plane flight to our DCL cruise....we just got them a little bit early, that's all.
THEY ARE SO COOL! WalMart has the best price on the players and the cartridges...but I also see Cost Co now sells the cartridges. Yes, it is quite an expense for the kids....don't want to spoil them too much now do we? :cool1:
But it is a form of entertainment that won't go "out"......there are kazillions of differnet games and they are hard! They don't seem to get "mastered" very easily. I have played them! They are fun!
I have already set aside several new cartridges for our cruise in the Fall (plane trip) that they won't see until we are in the air. :flower: Best way to do it, IMHO! :rotfl2:

Mickeynutz has pretty much hit the nail on the head. My wife has a tendency to worry a bit, but I have learned that the best way to deal with the worries is to start answering the "what ifs?".

And, someone once said: The difference between adventure and ordeal is attitude.

Just saw this from another poster...
KMart has 7" portable DVD players for $129 with a $30 rebate!! It is a Cyber Home brand and comes with earphones!

About the 6 yo getting lost. Once on the ship you will register him/her in the club and they will give them an ID bracelet that's a lot like a hospital bracelet andyou will get a pager. It will have their name, stateroom number, etc on it. If the child gets separated from you anywhere on the ship, any castmember can have you paged immediately.

I agree with the previous poster...Those of us who worry, usually also PLAN, and come up with ways to avoid the catastrophes.

I would create a "leaving home" checklist that lists the VITAL stuff you can't do without. Then check the list just before you leave.

Most of the challenges are really adventures in disguise.

We have done many 4+ hour flights with our kids from almost day one (and they are about to be 11 and 14.) We developed the "surprise" bag. I buy little, entertaining items all year long. Then when it is time for a trip, I wrap each item individually and then put the ones for each kid in a bigger bag. When they were little, I carried the bags in my carry-on, when they were older, I put them in their carry-ons when they weren't looking. Anyway, they get to open one at various intervals throughout the flight. You have to be thoughtful about the items or they just get opened and then spend the rest of the time until the next interval asking to open the next one! But you will be surprised what you can find that will occupy their time. Things that need to be put together or "done" are obviously the best. (caution - if assembly is required, make sure you have a box lid or something to contain parts on the tray table!) Our kids loved their "surprise" bags and looked forward to long flights. They also were really disappointed when they became too old for them!
