All forms seem to be filled out, way back in the beginning of the year for the 10-11 school year. But there hasn't been any news yet on when it's supposed to come. Over the summer there was an email saying there was a slight delay in disbursement, but no word yet on the Fall, and school starts monday.

Is any one else having a delay in receiving their pell grant??

Is there a limit to how many years you can receive the grant, if still in undergraduate classes??

Sorry but google does not want to be my friend today... I'm not having much luck with it.

I did. I received notification quite awhile ago that I qualified for $3000 worth of Pell Grant for fall and spring semester. So only about $1500 for fall but that was enough to pay for 2 classes and books. The rest I will need to pay for.

I applied 1/31 and got notification of my anticipated amount around the second week of May for this school year. Classes started last week, and they'll disburse directly to the school, then the school deposits the balance into my checking account.

From what I understand, you are eligible for 18 semesters over your lifetime, so long as you're an undergraduate.

If you can't find your answers online, why not check with your college's financial aid office? They'll have the answers for you. Most colleges will allow you to register for classes with a deferment if you have proof that you completed your FAFSA and financial information handy.

That makes me wonder-did you apply and not enroll in school? The funds are not given out unless you're enrolled and have attended the first week of classes, according to federal law. Also, if you drop or withdraw, you are liable to pay back the funds-something a classmate found out the hard way last year.

He's already enrolled in the classes, and that's paid for. But he's waiting for the Pell Grant to buy his books. One of his classes he's taking this semester, is a retake for math from spring '10 class, and they've already changed the book. This will be his 8th semester receiving the grant.

The FAFSA website says everything is "processed". And the school website isn't showing anything. And there's nothing showing up in his school emails about needing more information or paperwork. So we're assuming everything has been turned in.

We'll be making the trip to the Finacial Aid office monday before class, but I was just wondering if this seems to be a problem anywhere else. Or a just a fluke with his application.

His school didn't do an advance book authorization from the Pell? Both schools I've attended under Pell funds allowed students to get their textbooks if there was any left over after they'd registered for classes.

For instance, I was eligible for 2600 this semester, and my tuition and fees came out to 2040, so I had an authorization for 560 at the bookstore to make textbook only purchases. Thankfully, I could rent two of my books, because the other two were $200 each!

Never heard of that. Does that allow you to buy books prior to the pell grant being distributed??

He usually gets an email the last week prior to school starting saying how much he's getting. And then a check is mailed to him, getting it just a few days before classes begin.

The school should be able to tell you something. Also you should be able to go on to the FAFSA website and pull up and print a confirmation page which shows the EFC number and will tell you the amount that you can expect (barring any changes being made).

Some schoools will write a financial aid waiver that will allow you to purchase books with the financial aid they expect you to get even if all the paperwork has not been completed. We will do this for students based on the confirmation page they bring in.

If you have put the correct school code in they should be able to pull the information in.

Keep in mind that the amount awarded is for full time. So, if FAFSA says you have been awarded 1500.00, it means you will receive that amount if you are full time (12 hours for us, for example), if you register for less than that your pell amount will go down accordingly.

Thanks, luvsJack. I wasn't sure if it's just the two schools I am attending. Both of them do the advance book purchase.

Sandra, for instance, on my main school's website, there's a link to my financial aid information. It states my Pell, based on the full time enrollment that luvsJack mentioned. I went back and checked, my confirmation of anticipated funds for 10/11 came from my school, not from the federal site. (but when I go onto the federal site, it agrees with what my school's statement lists.)

I have found all of my information on my main school's website. The only times I've talked to the financial aid staff in person is to inquire about Federal Work Study opportunities (and that's another story for another day...).

My sympathies that he's got to wait in the bookstore lines on the first day of classes. Not a quick thing to do. (the staff at mine has come to know me because I'm always there within a few hours of getting notification that my bookstore funds are available!)

luvsjack: can I send you a PM with what we do know, to make sure it's right??

He's full time, and it shows how much he's eligible for.

My school is on a quarter system:
Winter quarter starts first week January; pell grants are issued last week of January.
Spring quarter starts first week April; pell grants are issued last week of April.
Summer quarter starts first week July; pell grants are issued last week of July.
Fall quarter starts first week October; pell grants are issued last week of October. I have never seen them issued more than a week late; your school should be able to give you exact info.

Don't feel too bad... I am actually still waiting on my Grad Plus loan. I received the rest of my money last week, but this one is still listed as accepted and estimated aid (aka I accepted it and the school is still expecting it).

I need to call financial aid and check on it, but every time I have tried so far it's been a 45+ min estimated wait.

Must be the start of term! We are within the first 3 weeks. We try to tell our students not to call because they will rarely get us on the phone. We have so many students waiting to see us that we really don't have time to answer the phone. I know they hate to come to the school because of the long waits to get in the office but its the easiest way to get things straightened out.

Yea, I have not really tried too much this week and will wait until the end of next week. Like I said, I got the rest of my money, and it is showing as expected. If it wasn't on there at all, then I would be freaking out! LoL.

My guess, based on what I am seeing with my account, is that the school hasn't been sent the funds yet for some reason. When they do, I am sure they will send them on. If I don't see them by the end of next week (the first week of class) then I will go speak to them. There are people who need to talk to them a lot sooner then I need to, I am sure.

Would any one know anything about the Cal Grant. From the website it states that if you're approved for the grant, but not attending a university, the funds would be set aside in an account till you attend the university.

If that's really the case, he'll be all set for his junior year. Which is a big concern of his.

If this is his 8th semester, he should already be a senior.:confused3

He decided to hold off on math... and it's the only thing holding him back. Besides that, he could have 3 AA degrees right now. He wants to go to university for a BA to teach english.

He wasn't always a full time student either. But hopefully he'll be able to finish in about a year after transferring.

Mine shows up in my student on line account and I could charge books against it at the school book store, but they are taking the money for books out of a different scholarship.

You're going with him to the financial aid office? :confused3 After seven semesters of college I would think he can handle it. It's his account, grant, etc. He will probably get better results if he handles this himself.

Hope it works out!

Well I don't think he needs my assistance either. But I do go with him to the campus when he's in class. It's in a nice neighborhood, and I go for a walk or sit on the swing in the playground. Other than standing there, I don't think I'd be of much use either. I wasn't meaning it in the literal sense. More of that's on the agenda come Monday.
