Hi all, just wondering after reading another thread about other people with a baby that walked late.

My youngest is now 15 months old and close to walking, but not. Infact she gets close, and then back away.

She has just done things differently then most kids. She wanted to sit up since she was born, and acompished that rather early for her age. Since then all other goals are rather on the back burner! She scoots around while sitting up, and has been since 10 months old or so. She is so good at this she doesn't care to walk. (she can make it up and down an entire flight of stairs all on her own).

The Dr. thinks she could walk if she wanted too. She can stand on her own, with no help what so ever, just dosen't walk much. In fact on Halloween she took 3 steps and hasn't since then. She is very bright, signs about 15 signs and talks a bit too. She understand what we are saying just fine and follows simple directions.

I really don't mind her scoot, or her doing her own thing. Since I have an older child who started walking at 10 months old I am rather relaxed about this (and other things). However her pants get so dirty and I worry about her getting steped on in puplic.

Any other late walkers out there? When did they start? What did people say to you about it?

I updated my last post, but incase you dont want to go there........

She is taking steps now. :cheer2: :Pinkbounc

but if you are really worried you can call early intervention in your area and they will screen her and make sure she is on track. You do not have to go thru your doctor to do this. If she does need a little extra help in an area they will provide therapy free of charge till she is 3, or as long as necessary. I'm pretty sure that this policy is similar in all states.
My little guy is also 15 months and started walking at 14 months. That was a big relief, unfortunately hes got some other issues going on that we have had to contact early intervention about.
With all you have said, it sounds like your daughter is fine, just in no big hurry. I think anywhere under 18 months is considered in the normal range. Good luck!

My oldest didn't really walk on his own until he was 17 months old. He held our hands all the time and didn't seem to want to do it on his own. The doctor wasn't going to get worried until at least 18 months.

He has always been a cautious kid like that.

I'm happy to report he is now a perfectly normal almost 13 year old getting ready to go see the new Harry Potter movie tonight.

My ds10 was born two months prematurely, so we never really knew what to expect as far as developmental milestones. But he did do one odd thing: he walked before he could sit up on his own. He started pulling up at nine months, and walked at 11; but if you sat him on the floor without support, he'd fall over. :confused3 His ped. wasn't concerned, and he (obviously!) began sitting on his own sometime after.

Babies surely do things differently, don't they? I hope no one's making negative comments about your sweetie walking "late"--I can't stand that kind of talk, especially from over-competetive parents.

Both your dd's are just adorable! :)

My son was a late walker, too. He was so late, I almost brought him in for evaluation. He actually walked alot on his knees. He started to take a few steps when he was about 12mo. I think he realized he would be much quicker on his knees. When he was still crawling, one of his favorite toys was lids from baby food jars. He would carry them around in his mouth,up over his nose. It was great--I would bring a bag of jar lids with me, and he would be content for hours. I didn't care if he lost any.

In the long run, it hasn't made much difference that he was a late walker. He is now an A/B student in the second grade in accelerated classes.

DD was a late walker, but we were on top of it. Both DS and DD had speech delays as well, so they were in early intervention for a while.

DD#1 didn't walk until she was 14mos, she "walked" on her knees for months. She started taking a step her and there around 12mos. We were worried since her brother was walking well at 9mos. DD#2 is 11mos and is cruising and will stand on her own but she won't walk alone yet.

Thanks ez, I think she is fine too (that is my gut feeling), but mom worries pop up. Every kid is so different, and she is very different then her big sister, but does that mean there is something wrong?

I really haven't worried about this, but when I read others going on about a child who was around the same delevopment, but a few months older I started to wonder.

Her only other issue is she has food allergies, dairy and eggs. Before we caught it she was having trouble gaining weight, but now that we have eleminated them from her diet she is doing good.

My best friends oldest son scooted and didn't walk until he was 17 months old. She has a younger son who is 4 weeks younger then my DD. He scoots too.

Thanks luvmydogs, I think so too.

THanks everyone else. That is what I was thinking, but then the line starts to blur, don't worry until 18 months, but then after that what? I do think contacting early interention would be premature at this point, but I do wonder sometimes. She is very smart (as if my frieneds son who was a late walker.) She will stand up in her chair and then make the sign for sit and laugh at us. (because we are always telling her to sit down. )

DD starting walking at 18 months. She hip hops all over the place now! :teeth: Don't stress over it, it's way too soon! :goodvibes

I saw that thread last night. Really strange. All the other concerns, not to worry.

I was reading it when it poofed! :guilty: So I don't know how it delveloped. :rolleyes1

However the *other* issues on that thread, not mine! :goodvibes

You know I really feel like she can, or has been close to it for months now. However she really takes her time with things. I guess there could be wrose things. I like my kids to stay kid like as long as they can! It goes so very fast.

Ds # 1 was 16 months. Prior to walking he refused to put his feet on the floor. No cruising, no walking holding our hands, nothing. We had a Johnny Jump Up - no go. He would just lift his feet off the floor and hang there. One day he just got up and ran - no toddling or tottering. Since he had done all the other things at appropriate ages, the doctor was not concerned.

My DD is know to do the same thing. Often if you try to set her down on her feet she will just lift them up. Sometimes you go to set her down on her bum and she will put her legs down and and stand. It always suprizes us!

She will cruse thought and she will push things around and walk (walkers, chairs, turned over chairs, toy carts and strollers.) However she does seem to get tried doing that and will give it up after 10 steps or so (at the most.)

The girl can fly on on stairs though. It scares me how fast she is. If we leave the door or gate open she goes right up or down them. I have become hyper senitive about the doors. We were at a party the other day and I went over to the stairs. DH was there wacthing her climb them. He asked what was up and I told him I just had a feeling she was on the stairs! Mother senses!

Good to hear we aren't alone. I am guessing that 6 months from now this will all be a faint memory. However I will miss that little scoot, it really is very funny. I have never seen another child do anything just like it. :cool1:

My 16 mo. old DD (who, like your adorable daughter, has an egg allergy) just started walking about a month ago. I wasn't overly worried, but it seemed like everyone else (okay...mostly my mother) was! Luckily, our pediatrician said she wouldn't be concerned until 18mo. My DD has super tiny feet, so balance seemed to be a problem for her. Once she finally got it, she really got it and took off (yikes!).

This is easier said than done, but don't stress out too much about this. If your DD has hit all of the other milestones and is signing and talking, she is doing great! My DD is quite a talker, so I prefer to think that she was just concentrating on her verbal skills rather than her physical skills. :)

I was the first in my family to walk upright

That is so true! She has the tinyest feet ever. Like normal shoes don't fit. (they are fat and short!) We put her in robbee (soft leather shoes) and she is fine. I asked the Dr about it and she said those are the best for learning to walk. She was wearing size 0 to 6 months and just now can fit in the 6 to 12 month shoes (infact the 0 to 6 still fit). She is a tiny kid (as I was too). They were concerned for a while because she stopped gaining weight fora while, but once we got her allergies under control she gained 10 oz in 2 months, before that she gained 2 oz in 6 months! :earseek: (she had grown a few inches though.)

I tend to think the same thing, she is concentrating on other things right now and walking isn't as big a goal for her. However she is unsteady on her feet and those tiny feet might have something to do with it.

We are hoping she is walking by time we go to WDW in Jan. She wants to get down and move, but when she is on the floor I worry about people stepping on her (and it happens!)

How is your DD doing with her egg allgery? Mine is doing rather well, she had her MMR shot and had no reaction what so ever to it. We were very pleased. They are going to retest her again in 3 months. I did try feeding her cake with egg baked in it and she did get a rash though. Oh well, hopefully she will out grow it soon. I personally could stand to have an egg roll and a fee other things, but I am coping well (she is still breast feed so no allgery food for me either.)

DD11 first crawled 2 weeks before her 1st birthday. She never wanted to do anything but sit & look at board books so we finally started putting them out of her reach so she would have to move to get them!

She finally walked at 15 months.
She was very large though...9.8 pounds at birth, 22 inches long...20 pounds at 4 months.

She has always been ahead at everything but walking.
She talked in complete sentences before others her age said single words.
She skipped a grade & the principal talked about skipping her again (I said "no").
She's now about 5'4" & 100 pounds.
Completely normal & happy.

I would not worry about your "late" walker. :)

I'm still breastfeeding my DD too, so I feel your pain. DD and I are also vegetarian, so our diet is pretty limited these days (but no cookies, cake, or (most) ice cream has been good for my diet :) ). If she had been allergic to dairy, I don't know what I would have done!!! Can't live without my cheese!

If you had asked me yesterday, I would have said that DD was doing pretty good with the egg allergy. However, we had a bit of a scare today. DD and I were at a library storytime and one of our friends, with my permission, gave DD an animal cracker (which typically do not have eggs in them). All of the sudden, DD's cheeks were bright, cherry red. By the time we were driving home, I became concerned and called our allergist. His office was a couple minutes from closing for the day so they sent us to the emergency room!!!! DD was okay a couple of hours later and it turned out that the cookies didn't have eggs listed as an ingredient. The dr. at the ER said that if the cookies were processed on a machine that also processed something with eggs in it, that may have caused the reaction, or she could have another food allergy that we are unaware of. So, I guess that we'll be back for more allergy testing sooner than we thought. What a day!

We delayed DD's MMR, for now, until we do the allergy testing again (it was suppose to be in February...who knows now...). DD also didn't get a flu shot because of her allergy. On the 0 to 4 point scale with the allergy testing, DD got a 4.

Until possibly today, she had never had direct exposure to egg, so we weren't sure how severe her reaction would be. We suspected an allergy because of her excessive spitting up and HORRIBLE rash after I had a flu shot so I am a little concerned about the vaccines. This allergy business is scary stuff. I guess that I am just very grateful that she doesn't have a peanut or tree nut allergy.

Sorry to babble on...but it's nice to compare notes with someone in a similar situation!

I can't help but think that this has something to do with my DD's late walking! DD was between a size 2 and 3 for most the summer. In late September, I bought her a pair of 6-12 month Robeez that were definitely on the large side for her. Right around the time of our WDW trip (end of Sept.- early Oct.), her feet sprouted to a size 4 and her Robeez fit much more comfortably. It was a couple of weeks later that she started walking.
