I would try and go for the onsite hotels if possible. We stayed offsite for 2 trips but managed 4 nights at the Royal Pacific and it was lovely, especially with the advantage of front of the line with the room key. If you have a Universal Annual Pass there may be reduced rates nearer your trip.
Other than that, we stayed at the Homewood Suites Universal(make sure it is this one and not the I Drive one), and I really would stay there again in a heartbeat. They are suites and include a breakfast buffet and Manager's reception 4 nights a week. You can walk to Universal in 20 or so minutes if you so wish.
