A few months ago a Member posted about working with DVC and a local food bank to establish a food donation program. Many of us have unused items that could be of use to families in the Orlando area. Instead of trashing the unopened, non-perishable items it would be a great idea to re-distribute the items to those in need.

I haven't seen any recent postings regarding the status of this project. Any news?

After lots of red tape and plenty of people saying "that's a great idea but it isn't up to me". We were told "that's a great idea but we can't do that". They did however agree to allow us to particpate in the CM food drives. There are several a year and if one isn't going on when you checkout they will hold it for the next one.

The only other piece of information was they confirmed mousekeeping IS ALLOWED to take home unopened food. There is no guarantee they will so it may or may not end up in the garbage,

Thanks
Sandy

Thank you very much for that update. I know you put in a lot of time and effort regarding this project. It was a terrific idea.

At least if we can participate in the CM Food Drives, it's better than nothing. I'm also glad to hear that the staff can take unopened items if they wish to. It's truly a shame to toss perfectly good items.

I thought about this Wednesday when we were leaving, but we didn't have anything upopened, and about all that was left was half a margarine container and half a cream cheese container.

If you use a towncar service, some of those drivers will also accept unopened items to donate to charity - often through their own church. Just ask when they drop you off to start your stay.

I'm so sad the donation program or the "Hospitality Closet" didn't work. Its a real shame.

InstImpress- I know you put a lot of work into this, just too bad when things don't work out.

At BCV over the Christmas holidays we passed a box that was set up for collecting food....we were just passing through to another memebers room so I didnt' read the details...but there was one for at least 1 day...

I saw an area at Beach Club in December as well that said unopened items would be shared with area families in need.

I thought it is a great idea!

We donated our unopened staples at the BCVs in December, too. There was quite a bit in it the Sunday we checked out!

That's too bad that Disney won't allow the food pantry to pick up unopened food packages. I will check with our limo driver when we make our next reservation. Annmarie

I am happy to hear that mousekeeping is allowed to take the unopened items. That's good enough for me.
