Any "must-do's" in Winnipeg?

We are going to Canada next month for a family wedding, about 2 hours north of Winnipeg. Will be staying in Winnipeg going up and coming home and thought if there is anything we should see we could spend an extra day or two. I have been online looking and so far only see a zoo, but I am thinking there must be a lot more to do and I am not looking in the right places. Any ideas?

Yes, leave as quickly as possible! :rotfl2::rotfl2:

I'm kidding, I'm a kidder! I have never been to Winnepeg nor do I know any one that has ever been there.

Since I have no advanced knowledge of the place I shall bow out now. A little late but what ya gonna do. I'm sure it's a great place.

Hello there, I'm from Winnipeg :) You should go to the Forks, it's a large Market, always lots of fun. There's also a nice Children's Museum there if you have children traveling with you. The zoo is somewhat run down, and our only polar bear passed on recently. But the Assiniboine park where the zoo is found is lovely and a great place for a picnic. I guess it all comes down to who is traveling with you. Are you by yourself, with a partner or with children? If there are no children, I highly recommend going to the McPhillips Street Station Casino and going on the "Millenium Express," it's a sort of ride that walks you through Manitoba's History AND it was designed and built by Walt Disney Imagineers. It's certainly a little gem that's tucked away in the city.

If there are no children traveling with you, I highly recommend a new restaurant called Segovia, we went last weekend and it was amazing.
Also, with kids or without, Bridge Drive-In is a GREAT place to get ice cream in the summer.

Here's a good website:

Have a good trip!

Thanks for the link... I am on my way to check it out now.

It will be DH and I along with our 16 year old DD. He just wanted to come home the day after the wedding, but I thought since we were there we should make the most of it and find a couple things to do. He did bring home a book from Triple A today and I found a paddleboat tour and a train tour, I need to go online and check them out some more. Bummed about the zoo, I enjoy going to new ones and was looking forward to the polar bears.

Thanks goofyernmost for the laugh... I was starting to wonder if maybe that should be exactly what we needed to do since I wasn't really finding much.

I would definitely second the idea of the Forks market.
Another couple of thoughts.

We have some great beaches such as Grand Beach. It was once rated in the top 10 beaches in North America.

Lower Fort Garry is about half hour outside of Winnipeg and is a great way to spend an afternoon.

There is also a Museum of Man and Nature right in the city.

Is your 16 dd a shopper? We have some large shopping malls. Probably for teens I would do either St. Vital mall or Polo park.

There is a beautiful baseball park if you're interested in watching the Winnipeg Goldeyes.

Rainbow Stage is an outdoor theater in the park and is showing Rent and Joseph and his Technicolour coat this summer.

Winnipeg is also the city of festivals. Depending what weeks you are here you might want to check out the Folk Festival, the Fringe Festival or Folkorama. All three are very popular events which bring people to the city.

How cool to have a whole thread about my city :cool1:

I definitely agree with checking out the Forks. It is where the Red and Assiniboine Rivers meet and has a variety of shops to check out.

Also second the idea of the Goldeyes, not a bad seat in the house and all tickets are very reasonably priced.

You could visit one of our 7-11s and buy a slurpee in the slurpee capitol of the world. Yep, we even buy them when it's -30C with a windchill of -42C.

I can't think of any ideas that haven't been mentioned so I will just say have fun in our city and please PM me if you have any questions.

ETA can you please change the title to the correct spelling? For some reason it's like nails on a chalkboard to see it spelled wrong.

Sneaking in to ask a question.

We will be in Winnipeg next August for a wedding. Would it make sense to head up to churchill to see polar bears at that time of year? We have already done alot of the things in and around Winnipeg, although I am sure we will repeat many of them. We plan to be on vacation in the area for the last 3 weeks of Aug.

Drive around in downtown, the buildings are beautiful. We were up there several years ago, also for a wedding (friends from SF even :thumbsup2), but our kids were younger and we went to the zoo and to the Children's Museum. There is a Canadian Mint there but I don't know if you can take a tour or not. It seems like there is a golf course on every block there too. :lmao:.

Thanks for the ideas everyone! I had found a little about the Forks market area and thought I could talk DD into going there just because of the name :lmao: Because she is NOT a shopper in any way, hates it with a passion! I am thinking it will be like RiverWalk in San Antonio, but that is just a guess.

In the tour book I also found Lower Fort Garry, I think that will be a great stop as we head back down from the wedding on Sunday, then go to the Forks market area that evening. Does it stay open on Sunday evenings?

Going to look into the train tour for the next day, it is called Prairie Dog Central Railway, does anyone know about that? There is only a phone #, no website so I don't have many details right now. Is it mostly a scenic ride? It does say they stop twice at country markets and is a 2 1/2 hour trip. Does it go far, or is the time spent mostly at the markets? Would love to see some scenery.

Thanks again and keep the ideas coming! Off to change the title now, sorry :flower3:

I can almost see the Prairie Dog Central from my house. It's really an opportunity to ride an old train. Think 2.5 hrs on wooden seats looking at the prairies. It is beautiful but nothing fancy. The two stops are in little towns where locals will sell baking and stuff. Again nothing fancy. It's mostly run by volunteers so probably no fancy website or anything.

The stores at the Forks won't be open Sunday evening probably close at 5 or 6 pm. The walkways and restaurants will be open.

Churchill is a great place to visit but it's a long long ways away and only accessible by train or plane. No roads that far north. It would be a very expensive couple of days but great to see the polar bears and whales.

The Canadian mint does do tours and my kids really enjoy it.

There is a waterpark Fun Mountain if it's hot out the kids would enjoy.

My Uncle used to be a conductor on the PDC so I highly recommend it. Nothing, and I do mean nothing will be open on Sunday after 6. That's the law here. Well, restaurants are open, but no shopping stores will be.

And thanks for changing the title :thumbsup2

We also have an IMAX theatre here so you might want to check out what is playing there.
