My DD just bought an iPod for herself, and I got one recently, and I'm wondering if this is going to create a problem if we both do updates from my computer. Anyone know the answer? Thanks.

First question - do you have Windows XP?

I can help you, I just need to know that first ;)

Okay DH is way more knowledgable but we have 3 ipods in our house.

Each one has its USB cable and we have a 4 capacity USB Hub.

So on Itunes there is a main library. All songs are downloaded to there. Each user makes there own playlist. From the library you transfer the song to your playlist. Everytime you update your IPOD it will update (sync I think is the word) from your playlist.

Now my DH and two DSs can have the same songs on their playlist. Once you download it to your Library, it can be transferred to all three playlists.

I hope this helps. Please correct me if I am wrong.

My DH is the I-Pod master so I'm consulting him on this.... LOL. Apparently you don't need to make playlists if you have WinXP.... I'll explain shortly once he tells me what to tell you guys - give me a few ;)

We have different playlists, because my oldest DS can have songs on his that are a little to mature for the younger one.

And no one wants the songs on my DH playlist. :rotfl2:

But if you have a better solution great let me know.

Above is correct, but you have to make sure the ipod itself gets updated from the corresponding playlist not the library itself. Most are auto set to the library, which is fine for one, but not for more than one unless everyone wants the same songs. So just make sure they have the correct settings or the seperate playlists will be all for nothing!

It is kinda confusing, but maybe not for your husband. I just happen to be technically deficient in many computer related areas!

Methinks the easiest way to deal with this would be to just go into the preferences menu and select "update iPod automatically". There may be an easier way, but that's how I would do it.

We have 4 iPods here, and Windows XP. We have a multi usb port, but only plug one iPod into the main usb at a time.

in iTunes we have our main library where all our songs are placed.

Then we made a playlist for everyone and they put their songs on their playlist. When you insert your iPod you can go to preferences and tell it to automatically update that iPod with a specific playlist.

I hope that makes sense :teeth:

If you have Windows XP with multiple logins at startup (different wallpapers/program lists etc) what you do is download ITunes setup file (like setup.exe or whatever it's called) and install it on each of the logins SEPARATELY. To do this, you need to have administrator rights on the logins.

If you do this, each login has its own "version" of ITunes. You can then add files from any location on your computer to your own "version". Keep in mind though, if you make any changes to the music files on the computer it will affect all logins accessing that particular file (moving/deleting/renaming etc). So if you want some of the same songs on more than one IPod it might be a good idea to put those songs in a folder called "shared" so no one makes changes without you knowing. If you like completely different types of music this won't matter, just keep separate folders.

This way you just log in as yourself when you start Windows and worry about your own ITunes/updating. This way you can have your own unique playlists for your IPod and not worry about anyone elses.

Hope that helps. (We're geeks, I know :P)

Yes, I have XP! Yea! Thanks for telling me. I'll have her set up her iPod under her sign-in. You are awesome!

Thank you all for the help!

I'm not sure about this, so someone correct me if wrong. I have XP but the reason I didn't set up my daughter's under her own login is because the parental control settings restrict any downloading etc... I may be wrong, and may change if so... ??

There are three types of XP logins you can set up.

One is "Administrator" and that allows the user of that login to install programs and change settings etc.

The second is "Restricted" or "Guest" account and that does not allow for ANY programs to be installed. If your daughter has a "restricted" login, the above IPod thing I suggested won't work, you'll need to use the "playlist" thing.

The third is a "Limited" login which may or may not be able to install ITunes, you'd have to try and if it lets you install it, you're good. It does not allow some programs to be installed but I'm not sure if ITunes would be one of them or not.

You CAN change your daughter's login to an administrator if you want to (go to Start -> Control Panel -> User Accounts) while under an administrator login (not from a "limited" login). However, keep in mind if you do this it will give her the ability to install programs which you may not want.

HERE is a good reference to what administrator/limited logins can and can't do... and a bit more on the whole thing HERE...

(I work for a helpdesk for a living, can you tell ;) ).

I started reading this and was almost yelling, "setup another login account for the other IPOD user" and then you guys got to it. I just think that's the easiest way to deal with this situation. Seperate desktop profiles will keep your ITunes all neat and tidy for each pod. Now go subscribe to The Meandering Mouse podcast and enjoy stereo audio adventueres in the Disney parks courtesy of me...hehe...shameless plug.

Have fun!!
