My daughter is in the CP this fall. Today her college called and asked why she isn't enrolled. She said she was enrolled in the college internship CP program. She had to fill out a form in the spring saying she was doing an internship next fall. They had her down for no credit hours. She thought she would get credit hours. They said they would call her back.
Later today the school called and said if she got credit hours we would have to pay for a full semester of school ($5500). On top of the expenses of the CP, and when the college is doing nothing?
She does not NEED the credits. She is taking classes this summer and is already a year ahead so a semester in Florida will not hurt her graduating on time. She also is enrolled in the Heritage class when she is in Disney. So we have decided that is the way we will go--do the CP for the work experience, not the credits.
But the way her college is being so stupid, with one office not knowing what the other office is doing...Im paranoid she will go to sign up for spring classes and they will either 1) deny she is a student or worse, 2) say her scholarship ($4000 a semester) is gone!
She has a text in to a college friend who did the program in the spring to see if she had to pay. But does anyone else have problems like this? It's my alma mater too, so I'm embarrassed that they are so scatterbrained.

With my school I had to go in and fill out some paper work. One canceling my financial aid and when I would need it reactivated (so my financial aid was not lost due to me taking a quarter off, I don't know if it's the same for scholarships but would think so) and also a paper letting them know what quarter I'd be missing, when I'd be back, and what I'd be taking when I got back. I also talked to my class advisor about leaving and possible credit for the Disney classes. I didn't have to pay any money and didn't lose my financial aid. My paper work basically put everything on hold. My class advisor said I probably couldn't receive credit but was excited for me getting in and said it wouldn't mess anything up except my graduation date. Sounds like the college is having serious miscommunication issues.

My daughter, who is almost done with Spring Advantage, received 6 internship credits but she did have to pay for the credits. I don't know of any situation in which you earn credits without paying for them.

She did talk to her friend who did CP last semester. She took a full load of Disney University credits. We are just going to go with the 3 hour Heritage class she has signed up for and be glad to have CP on the resume. I am still going to try to get something in writing from her school. I'd hate to have her try to call in October to get spring classes and have some ridiculous complication come up where I'd have to take time off, go to her school and figure out what was going on since she will be 1800 miles away, or have her try to call from Florida and play phone tag with people who aren't sure what the answers are.

I would get everything in writing from the school.

I was already a college graduate when I did my program but other kids I knew on the program were told if they didn't do online classes they would loose their scholarships so they were dong 15 hours of online course work as well as their CP. Others were told if the internship wasn't for credit they were at risk of loosing their scholarship.

It really seems it is up to each individual school and even department. I know in my school (specifically my department) if you took a semester off you had to start the whole year over for the department courses because they were a year long and the next second semester of level two may be different than the one you would have taken. That is why everyone in my school either did a whole years worth of the program or waited until after graduation.

Every college is different, my school would not accept the CP for any credit/internship and if I took a semester off school then I would lose most of my scholarships which I discussed with my professors and department chair before I left.

That meant I had to be a full-time student while on the CP so I took 4 online classes and had to pay for the semester to keep my scholarships. They would not count any Disney classes (like Heritage) for my college either. If they had accepted it as an internship (if I'd gotten photopass) I still would've had to pay the tuition for the semester because it's technically a class through the university. I am also required to have an internship for my major so the professors visit on-site to see what I'm doing.

It's possible they will say she has to take classes to keep her scholarhips, it's also pretty general to charge a semester for an internship if you are receiving credit for it through the college. If she has to the college should let her enroll in online courses (if they are provided) even this late so that she can stay in school, keep her scholarships, or get credit while she is on the CP. It's hard but doable. Good luck!

I know of more than one person who was told they would lose their scholarships if they took the semester off for the CP (not at my school but at other schools) I did not do the CP for credit and did just take a semester off and I had to stop my financial aid for that semester, but my school only gave need based aid not merit, so nothing was affected by taking the time off.

I'd be sure that she gets a clear answer from the financial aid office about the consequences of taking a semester off with regard to her aid package.

My daughter got internship credit which we paid tuition for as expected. She worked with her academic advisor to set everything up with her school. Not enrolling for a semester would have made it so that she would have to start paying school loans. She is doing a second program this fall, but will be finished with all course work when she goes. It doesn't sound like your daughter's school dropped the ball, but that they had not been informed of your daughters plans so that it could have all been worked out in advance.
