So in August my daughter and I are driving to WDW and I will not drive through Atlanta because its a madhouse any alternate routes or tips for me ????
:worship::confused3

We've driven three times, the most recent time was March of 2008. We always leave after work on Friday (around 4:00) and stop for the night just inside Tennessee. Then we finish the drive on Saturday. We have never found traffic to be particularly bad going through Atlanta. In fact, the first time we made the drive DD was 15 and on her learner's permit and we let her drive that portion. Maybe it's worse during the week.

Make sure you get the most recent edition of "Along Interstate-75" by Dave Hunter. It is SO helpful!

We never find Atlanta that bad, just avoid rush hour and use HOV lane.

Denise in MI

I'm from southwestern MI, so it is harder to avoid Atlanta for us. I will agree though that unless you go during the heart of rush hour, it isn't that bad. We went through on the tail end of a Friday morning rush and it wasn't too bad. If you stay in the car pool lane you will be fine. We never went slower than about 50 MPH while the regular lanes were stop and go...That being said, coming back we went a different way just for the heck of it. Mapquest says it shouldn't be more than a few minutes longer for you.

Detroit to Cleveland to Charleston to Charlotte to Jacksonville to Daytona Beach to Orlando

We just drove through Atlanta on 2 consecutive Saturdays.
SB on 75 at 7:00 AM was a breeze. I was driving 70 and the few others out there were well over that. There had been a deer killed going down the hill into downtown, thought it was a weird place for a deer.
NB on 75 at 4:00 PM was a smooth ride too, no brake tapping at all.

I think Cincinnati is worse than Atlanta for driving.

An alternate route is 75 to 40 at Knoxville to 26 to 95 to 4.

With the exception of driving through Atlanta in 1998 when the St. Louis Cardinals were playing the Atlanta Braves, because Mark McGwire was breaking the most home runs in one season which caused a lot of traffic for everyone going to the game, all the other times while going through Atlanta my family and I have had no problems.

I'm from eastern Ohio. I have taken both 75 and 77 and much prefer 77. It also seems shorter but probably isn't. 77 is much more scenic and only has Charlotte and Jacksonville to navigate through. Atlanta can be a nightmare! I drove it one time in pouring rain at 6pm (wintertime it was dark) and the traffic was horrendous! Another time there was a major accident and we sat still forever. I agree that Cincy can be awful also. Also trying to get from one interstate to another in Columbus at rush hour is not fun. Can you tell we have a habit of hitting major cities at rush hour?:rotfl:
