I have a map that shows there is a Manatee sanctuary on the Banana river behind the Radisson at Port Canaveral. Has anyone gone there and seen Manatees? Or any other spot around the port? I'll be there tomorrow and would like to see one of them critters.

did'nt see manatee's, but we saw alot of dolphin as we were leaving the port on 4/4. Was a very cool sight! Bring alittle pair of binoculars along with you.

Have a great trip1:sunny:

I would LOVE to know if you see anything tomorrow! I was going to head over there the evening before we got on the ship next month.

We went to the location you mentioned in Nov '02 after reading a post from Shirley (on these boards) about this spot. We spotted glimpses twice in a 30 min period. By glimpses, I mean the top of their head or snout only. We threw in a couple of heads of lettuce but they didn't seem interested. I will say it was very cold and windy that morning (like low 40's !). We went as soon as we got off the Wonder.

Last september..the manatees were swimming right beside the ship, before we left the doc. Beautiful!

Last June on our cruise, they were also right by the ship as everyone was boarding. We got to our cabin around 1:30 and went out on the verandah and lo and behold. It must have stayed there for at least ten minutes - this was as long as we watched it. Thought it was a common sight and never thought another thing about it until this post. Guess we were blessed with some Pixie dust and did not even know it at the time. - Mike

Two cruises ago we saw TONS of manatees just laying out in the sun on the pier while sailing out of Port Canaveral.

Last time looked for them, but only (? ) saw tons of dolphins swimming alongside the ship. It was cool!:)

We tried to go to that park on the morning of 4/3/04. If it was the right location - it seemed to be - the park was closed and under construction. We drove up and down the road behind the Radisson and that was the only place we could find that looked like it might be the sanctuary. There was no sign along the road that we could see.

Just don't want someone to be dissapointed it they are really looking forward to this.

It's getting pretty warm and the mantee will be heading out to sea and up the coast (If they haven't already done so).

No telling where those laying out on the pier in the sun will be heading that dclwdwlover mentioned, I guess to the nearest buffet. :smooth:

You're definitely more likely to see them during warmer months. During cooler months they tend to stay in warm places like the water discharge from power plants.

We didn't get to the manatee santuary thanks to Budget rental car and their LOOOOONG line at MCO to rent a car. We did see a pod of dophins swimming in the turning basin while the ship was in port the first day.

Maybe next time.
