I was just talking to someone that said a librarian in a state school could make upwards of $80,000, if they have their Masters Degree.

I find that hard to believe.

Anyone know the salary range of a librarian?

What's a Mater's Degree? :p :p

Can I laugh hysterically now, or do I have to wait until the kids can't see me???!!!??? I'm a h.s. lib. with my master's+24 credits. The majority of school districts consider us the same as any other teacher, as far as pay goes. In the small town I work in, tops is in the mid 50's, in the large city where my folks teach, it's in the mid 60s (this would be 20+ yrs experience, masters+). It's a great job, I love it, but I'm sure not making 80K a year! Usually the only school professionals that have their own salary scale are school psychologists, and they are paid higher. If I had taken my master's degree and called myself an "information specialist" for a big business, then *maybe* I'd be making something close to what you heard...

Thanks, Briar Rose, but we pulled a "Green Acres" seven years ago, so we could live in the country. The cut in pay was more then made up for by having sweet kids and nice townfolk who treat us like one of the community. $$$s great, but peace of mind is even greater...

Sounds like a good career choice. :)

Many of the librarians at our company make this but they are required to have a masters in Library Science as well as at least an undergraduate degree in an area of Science (Biochemistry, Immunology, etc.) if not a Masters or real job experience in that field as well.

I have been a librarian for fifteen years and only make about $40,000. It is possible for someone to make $80,000 as a librarian but you would probably have to be in a management position. I have seen salaries as low as $22,000 for someone with a MLS.

See, I knew I wasn't the only one here! And there are a few others lurking, I think...

I will be a librarian, soon, I hope! I am getting my masters in library and information science in May. I would be thrilled to make any money - $28,000 a year would be fine by me, certainly beats unemployment! $80,000 is only for the director of a large academic library, I would guess. My concentration was in technical areas/computers in libraries.

I am glad to see other DISer librarians here! :)

Im a circulation clerk, not a librarian. Have my Bachelors in English, but not a Masters. I make no where near that kind of money! But Im only 1.5mile from home and in town for DS.

Thank goodness for my newspaper job 1981-1992 thats when I made money and got my retirement fund.

I'm really excited to hear from everyone else (even if it wasn't my thread, originally). Public, academic, school--we're all sisters! And good for you imgoingtodisney; my aide is a wonderful person who does way too much work for too little $$.

I have an MLS from Univ of Texas at Austin. I took the corporate route and have ended up using my library training / skills as they apply to the corporate Intranet. Moving into this arena has definitely helped on the pay scale. Understanding information organization, how people search, records retention, etc. is a much needed skill in today's corporate world. Sadly, this demand isn't extended to our in-house libraries where the pressure is always to cut costs.
