Any Ideas on Gas?

So as of right now we have pushed our trip back until August, but If I can swing it I may push it back to leave next week. The only thing stopping me is how much gas it will cost us. Can anyone give me some examples of what it has cost them. We are coming from just outside of Philly and have a 1996 GMC Sierra 1500. I feel like its going to be like 500.00 in gas and just wanted to get an idea thanks!

Just went through our receipts from last August - gas prices haven't changed much since then. We have a 2008 Kia Sorento and pull our pop-up - and we are admittedly at the top end of the weight range we can pull with that car and generally tow in 4WD through any hilly terrain. That said, we left home with a full tank and spend about $640 on gas down to the Fort and back home to Upstate NY near Utica. So, your guesstimate of $500 sounds pretty close to me.

Should be easy to figure out. Take your towing MPG average (if you know it) and calculate round trip how many gallons you will burn as a minimum. Then multiply that with that national aveerage cost of fuel and you will be close and I alway estimate up.

My trip to Disney in January 2014 my guess was close to what I spent, ground trip was just shy of 1800 miles. I averaged 11mpg towing, resulting in around 164 gallons of fuel for the entire trip, which at an average of 3.85 a gallon for diesel I should have spent around 630 dollars on fuel. In reality it was closer to 700 in fuel after trips off campus for food shopping. It also left me with enough fuel that went I got home I didnt have to fill up for another 2 weeks (my work commute is only 1.5 miles to a train station.)

There is a smart phone app called Gas Buddy. It will tell you the Cheapest gas in your area. South Carolina has the cheapest Gas

I use this app. I like the Trip Calculator feature. I only make 2 gas stops each way to/from the Fort and while I don't necessarily buy gas at the Stations listed, I do hit those same exits or areas and buy based on traffic, easy in/out, and price.

PS - for those of you travelling I-75 down through Lake City, Gainesville, and Ocala to the FL Turnpike on the way to the Fort, the cheapest gas on that route is at Exit 329 on I-75 (the Wildwood exit) which is the first one north of the I-75/Turnpike interchange. I hit it going and coming.

$500 is about right (we use diesel). We like FlyingJ and have their frequent travelers card. The advantage is, it gives you a couple cents off plus you pay cash price with a credit card. At disney the walmart on vineland has gas and if you use a gift card from the main store you can get the cash price at the pump. Our stations are: FJ @ Carmel Church Va, FJ @ latta SC plus the flash foods exit 3 in GA and the murphy gas at the vineland rd walmart.

Good luck, take your time. I95 is a nightmare of a drive now a days, be safe.

Your drive is similar to mine. 1000 miles one way (STL- FW). So that's 2000 mile round trip. I get 8.5-9.5 mpg towing a 42 ft toy hauler depending on wind. (I've gotten as bad as 7.4 towing across Kansas with 20-25 mph head and cross winds) Hills don't seem to effect it much.

I use $3.90/gal for diesel as an average.

2000 miles/9 mpg= 222.2 gallons X $3.90= $866.67

Plug in your mpg and fuel price and you should be close.

We have travelled from northern Vt. to Cocoa Beach a few times in many different vehicles, Ford Escort, Tauras, and Expedition. Each trip (1450 mi. one way), we had our camping gear, 2 adults and 3 kids and those vehicles cost us 350 one way. I now have a 2001 Silverado with the 4.8 v8, 29 gall. tank, and the last time we went down 2011, it cost us the same amount, 350.00 one way. I know it sounds strange that four different cars would have the same cost, but I always keep track, I know where I have to make it to before I get fuel. Then once we get to our destination, well we go through about 200.00 just driving around for 2-3 weeks. Not only does it depend on what type of vehicle you have, but also your driving habits. I don't have cruise in my truck and I do find myself driving below or a little (10-15mph)over the speed limit. Not sure if this helps or not, either way have a safe trip.

It cost us about $800 last month, we got between 7.5-8.0 mpg towing our 24' Travel Trailer with our 2003 Avalanche with the 8.1L engine. Gas was averaging about $3.25/GAL, we had about a 260 mile range between fill ups. We left Oxford with a full tank and stopped in VA, SC and GA on the way down. We topped off in FL before we headed back and stopped in GA, SC, VA and needed to fill up when we got back to Oxford.

I use a very easy estimate method. Just figure out how much each mile costs and multiply that by your expected total mileage.

Estimate average of $3.75 per gallon. Big pickup truck gets about 10 miles per gallon, that's 37.5 cents a mile. Your trip is about 2000 miles round trip.

Estimate of $750. Gas cost per gallon and miles per gallon individually determined.

Once you get your cost per mile determined, everything is easy to estimate.

Use mapquest. It has a feature to calculate your fuel. It bases price off regional averages like southeast, northeast, etc.

It got easily within $15 of what it actually cost me. You just need to know your avg. mpg.

Here is what we did on our recent trip to the fort a few weeks ago. If you have Kroger fuel centers they offer 4x the fuel points on certain gift card purchases. They sell Disney gift cards! We bought gift cards for the kids and for the remaining balance of our campsite reservations. So we had almost 1500 fuel points. I filled up just over 30 gallons of diesel for $82 I think. Diesel was $2.73 a gallon with discount. There are Kroger fuel centers on 75 south throughout GA and the Kroger fuel discount is offered at Shell stations as well.
