Any homeschool families???

We are seriously considering homeschooling our daughter. She is only 5 months old now.
I appreciate all the responses.

Worm761 could you give me the internet sites you use. I am homeschooling my oldest dgrdd right now. We are using workbooks that we got but I think she needs more. In our town there is not other option except to homeschool or go to school. The schools are not that good. She is a smart kid and would be very bored at school. I agree that the socialization is something everyone is worried about but that really isn't a problem with her. She is the most social person I know. The only problem we have with her is that she relates better with adults at 8 than to children of her own age. We are always looking for more sites and info. The homeschooling group that is here in town believes in unschooling. In that you learn by your environment and don't need formal schooling. They have kids that are 10-11 and up that can't read or write. That gives homeschoolers here a bad name.

I'm not worm, but here are some sites that I use. The teachnology site is my favorite

Reading Key Teach-nology
Black Dog's telling Time worksheets
Handwriting for Kids

If you do a search for grade level and skill ie .... 6th grade math work sheets ... you might find some useful material. That's how Ifound most of the sites I use.

Discovery Channels teachers area has a work sheet generator that I love. you can do word puzzles, multiple choice test etc.

A question to answer your question, if homeschooling is an option to you then why wouldn't you? We homeschool our kids, they are ages' 10, 8, and 5. They have never been to public, or private school and have no desire to go. They get their interaction with other kids from programs such as AWANAS at church, and they participate in local sports activities sponsored by the local communities. We use the Abeka system which is excellent, we tried to piece a system together but it did not work out as well as the Abeka system does. We just really don't want our kids to have to face the things that go on in a public school. With homeschooling you can devote the time needed to each subject based on your child. If one child needs more math then that is what they get, in a public school each subject is alloted a certain time and if they don't get it then that is to bad.
We feel homeschooling is a great way to learn.:bounce: :smooth: :o :p

goofymom....I guess I didn't mean why in that sense. I wanted to find out if religion came into play, were they unhappy with the school system, did they always want to homeschool....that sort of thing.

I have always wanted to....just never felt competent enough to. My fault....my lack of self-confidence....but that's another post in itself. ;) Though I have done a home preschool with each of my school-age children and other families before K.

I have a new neighbor who has been homeschooling for about 8 years and we've been talking so I thought I'd poll the boards for more info and opinions. I'm so excited by all of this information. I understand how things might get heated on this type of post....like my neighbor said "I just love my children so much that I keep them home and teach them the things I think are important." Well, is she implying that I don't love my children....probably not. But did I feel rotten afterwards....yes. But there again is the women's guilt thing...which actually was another post!

Thank you to everyone who has posted so far....hopefully we can keep sharing more info.

I know when I give an answer like goofymom23 it is more of a play on words or negative responses I get for homeschooling... ie "why wouldn't you send them to PS and just suplement at home, after all the PS can offer so much that you can not". Another is "People only homeschool because they are too lazy to get up in the mornings". My answer is "yep, it is much easier to sleep until 9 and teach my kids for 7 hours, than it is to spend 30 min to get ride of them every morning at 6:45".

One reaction that the poster would never explain here on the DIS was "your child will never get to look through a prism in science".

Well my kids actually just studied the way chlorophyll affects light. They studied the light spectrum through a spectroscope they built and then looked at the color spectrum while filtering the light through a vial of chlorophyll (even made that, fill a jar with spinach and cover with alcohol, let sit for 3 days). The spectroscope was from a poster from NASA. I can't find the link I used right now for the free poster, but NASA has a lot of free science materials. I also have a Free NASA Earth Science curriculum that I will use once we finish the Jason Project.

Women are so hard on themselves and each other.....we have so much capacity for compassion, yet so little understanding sometimes. I joked with my husband last night that if SAHM were the bane to working moms, then homeschool moms must be the bane to SAHM. Don't light me up....I was joking!!! For example, a good friend who has a 2yo and works....she tells me she envies me being able to stay at home...yet she's not sure she would be able to handle it 24/7.....I continue that thought with, "I'd love to homeschool, I have all of the desire but I don't think I could do it." I know I just doubt my abilities too much.

Kudos to every parent doing what's best for their families....I'm amazed by moms and dads from every walk of life and in every situation. I guess things are just more exciting when you have something to debate.
